Sony’s True Goal: Connect Everything
Readers of this site may cringe upon seeing the word ‘Connect’, as it has been a word associated with a past suborganization of Sony that was considered by some as a complete management disaster. Whilst Connect had its highs and lows, Sony is looking to revitalize its definition of the word and bring every device it sells online. Sony CEO Howard Stringer on Thursday envisioned a day when most, if not all, the company’s products can be connected to the Internet and with each other.
“Our mission is simply to be the leading global provider of networked consumer electronics and entertainment,” Stringer said. To realize that mission, he said, Sony was prepared to invest $16.7 billion over the next three years not only to strengthen its networking capabilities but also to enhance such products as Blu-ray players/recorders, TV monitors, batteries, and electronic components.
Sounds like its a good time to be in the business of selling Cat-5(e) cable.

Fantastic idea if implemented correctly with no restrictions or weird file formats, would be nice for example if a sony mp3 player with divx, wmv, avi or whatever video file could stream or connect to any sony bravia and play it.
There is a side of me that wants to believe in what your saying, Ascariss; a company that could provide products that are free of restrictions and can communicate effectively with a beautiful interface to boot. However, many of us who have invested in Sony products in the past have been burned by their esoteric formats and such whereas the rest of the world enjoys products with no such fate. The only way Sony can achieve their goal is if they don’t have what you say. We are finally seeing that now from Sony lately. Maybe it is time. Sony has the network experience (second only to Google really) and they are beginning to embrace open standards.
