Apples has done a great job of providing a vibrant environment for developers creating and distributing apps. What a contrast to the telcos who have had pretty capable phones and connectivity for years!

Part of Sony's problem here is that they cover EVERY market. Where do you draw the line between a PSP and an eReader if the PSP can display eBooks and the eReader can play games? One very important thing regarding the eReader is that those who read lot's of books don't care much for most other technology (in my own experience). This is where the eReader can shine, a device that has one function (for a change) and does it very well. Unless eInk can be introduced to schools and colleges on a large scale this type of technology will be reserved for a "certain" market. Personally, I have read books on my PDA and it's annoying, I can't see why a PSP or an iPhone would be any better!!!! I recently purchased the PRS 505 here in Ireland and I'm really impressed. However, I would really like to see SONY concentrate on providing really good services and accessories for existing products rather than almost instantly replacing them with a newer model. I know SONY long enough to know that by releasing the PRS 700 support for the PRS 505 is already on the slippery slope.......and it hasn't been released in mainland Europe yet!!!!!!!! This is annoying. Indeed, upgrade technology, but continue meaninful support.................The whole thing with the NWA (Sonicstage) and NWZ( open platform) Walkmans was a disgrace, devices were completely outdated while still under warranty.

Uhh... all Sony has to do is allow the PSP to do a lot more than what it is currently doing, and in this case, be allowed to use ebooks. I think it would catapult Sony into being the number one ebook hardware seller, considering the install base.

All Sony needs is a firmware to allow the PSP to process ebooks, PLUS, an online store that a PSP can access directly over the internet (no stupid PC go-between) to purchase and download books. Of course, along with books, they should have games, music, videos, movies, and other DLC. How frigging hard can it be? Obviously, Apple is not going to do it for Sony. Neither is Microsoft. And since Sony can never get their shit together in regards to software, they should just enlist the help of Google.

It can be really frustrating to be a Sony end-user sometimes. If only I was in charge...

[...] oddly enough, even a Sony Insider blogger waxes enthusiastic about Stanza. Perhaps e-book readers don’t have to be mutually exclusive after all. [...]

No love for eReader, and the eReader/Fictionwise e-book store?

Or Bookshelf, and Baen Webscriptions's integration with it?

Well, not that I blame you. As I point out in my take on the article, Forbes didn't mention them either. They appear to have the impression that there are no commercial e-book vendors serving the iPhone yet, when in fact eReader had been downloaded for the iPhone 250,000 times as of the end of August, with over 300,000 books downloaded by iPhone/iTouch users at that point.
