Blu-Spec CD Introduced, the World Yawns

Sony Music Entertainment released a new specification of a CD format based on Blu-ray technology. I guess since the SACD format has not taken off as it should have (who was to blame for it: marketing or prices?), some of us (most likely Japan for now) will be able to witness a new high quality standard of CD listening experience. Supposedly, the new disks should be compatible with your current red laser players.

As a CD buyer for music, I am quite excited about this. I hope there is no confusion about its compatibility. The Blu-spec CD can be read by current CD ROM or players.

Blu spec CD is upgrade to conventional CD manufacturing process. It’s not format upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray or CD to SACD/DVD audio. Plus, yes SACD’s mutil channel support is nice and alll.. But as for Digital Audio Players, SACD does not provide that much advantages. Considering today’s consumers’ ignorance in terms of lossy compressed fomat, I wouldn’t call CD has a “low resolution.” After all, linear PCM is the one that Blu-ray uses…

CD format 16bit/44,1kHz is low resolution, no matter if it is burnt with red laser or blue laser it’s still RBCD

High resolution formats DSD 1bit/2.8224 MHz and DVD-Audio/FLAC 24bit/96kHz offer huge improvement over low-res CDs and I’m not talking about multichannel but stereo SACDs

I hope that SONY’s Blu Spec SACDs will soon be available …now that I’d love to hear it! I wonder how blue laser cutted SACD’s (which contain 4X more bits than CDs) sound when treated with blue laser

I only said Blu-spec CD is manufacturing upgrade, which means it has nothing to do with “resolution” upgrade, although data read by Blu-spec CD can be more accurate.
The reason for my excitement was that Sony’s plan to improve CD despite current reduction in CD sales.

And I was only stating that it would be a lot better if Sony decided to apply this manufacturing upgrade to next-gen SACDs rather than to 20th century Compact Disc format.

It’s like upgrading the DVD discs, when we have high resolution Blu-Ray format, it wouldn’t make any sense, we live in XXI century and you can watch your movies in HD, so why we even bother with upgrading low resolution CDs from from 1982 ?? Can’t we (music fans) have a high resolution format as well (SACD)???

    Oh, I agree with 100%.
It’s sad that average consumers have no idea or doesn’t care much about sound quality; most people prefer to download lossy compressed music files over CD. In the case of Blu-ray, people can see difference between visual quality but when it comes down to sound, which is somewhat more subtle, they don’t think it’s worth the price. The problem is that SACD sales have never topped CD and it seems like CD is the last hold out from online music stores…

Again, I’d love to see SACD to be popularized… Especially, because it’s library is so small compared to CD. And, it is this reason why so many audiophiles are forced to CD. It will be very exciting to see possibly new generation of audio media but the truth is that people are even complaining about paying 99 cents for a song. It’s hard to sell music; see how many so called “music lovers” illegally download or share files…

But, yeah Blu-spec SACD sounds great; but it will be only great if my personal favorite artists will release in that format… Anyway, disc based media’s future, especially for music, doesn’t look bright.
