Las Vegas SonyStyle Goes Above And Beyond

sony_01

I love SonyStyle, but I don’t go there too often to avoid temptations. It’s kinda cool running a site like this and visiting Sony’s retail store and seeing several products that you know Sony Insider announced first. I feel like the ultimate secret shopper. SonyStyle is a truly premium retail store and I’ve never had an unfavorable interaction there, but it seems like that good experiences consumers have had there aren’t really in the forefront. I recently found a blog post via Twitter that I’d love to share; a fellow named Michael Lewis and his wife were in Las Vegas for Valentines Day earlier this year and encountered a problem we’ve all probably encountered – a dead camera battery. What happens next is absolutely incredible, and probably ensures Sony has a customer for life:

“For Valentines Day my wife and I spent a long weekend in Vegas. Like anyone visiting Sin City we spent time gambling, going to some great restaurants and seeing spectacular shows. On Saturday morning we got up early and spent time walking from Casino to Casino. We ended up in Caesars Palace around dinnertime and as I went to take picture with my CyberShot I realized the battery was nearly dead. I forgot the charger back in the room and didn’t have a spare battery. We had dinner reservations and would have just enough time to make it to Cirque du Soleil for the show. We had no time to make it back to the room.

The good news is we were happy to find out there was a Sony Style store in the mall at Caesars. When we got to the store a representative greeted us and directed me to the batteries I needed for the camera. As I grabbed the battery the salesperson told me the bad news: the new battery would still need to be charged. Here is where service goes from good… to great. Instead of selling me a new battery, the salesperson took my current battery from the camera and charged it for me. The best part is, because it took about an hour to fully charge, she hand delivered it to us in the restaurant once it was ready to use. (Note: I did buy the extra battery to make sure this situation didn’t happen again)

How cool is that? Talk about going above and beyond for a customer. An important thing to note is the sales person had no idea I was loyal towards the Sony brand or that Sony is a client. All she new is I had a Cybershot and needed help with the battery. I’m not sure if this type of service is exclusive to the Sony Store in Las Vegas but it left a lasting impression for me.”

Sony Walkman Portal

sonywalkman

I recently stumbled upon a nice flash-enabled Sony Walkman website that provides some really interesting info on current technology used Sony Walkman. Usually Sony Japan has a really cool and informative info located on their Sony Walkman portal (currently promoted as PlayYou) but for English speaking population the content also matters.

Anyways, on that Walkman Portal check out the Why Walkman section as well as Walkman Heritage. Walkman X series is not listed on there however we all know it features Clear Audio Technology (Clear Bass, Clear Stereo, DSEE), so teleport yourself to learn the inside info on what makes Sony Walkman sound so good.

Dallas Cowboys New Stadium Chock Full Of Sony HD

dallas-cowboys-new-stadium

Sony Electronics and the Dallas Cowboys are joining forces to deliver a unique high-definition video experience. The team’s new stadium, scheduled to open in June, will give fans a great view from every angle, with more than 3,000 Sony LCD displays throughout the luxury suites, concourses, concession areas and more, offering fans viewing options that extend beyond the action on the field. Producing and sending content to these displays will be a range of Sony HD production equipment, including studio cameras, optical camcorders and production switchers.

Fans can view replays, watch interviews with players and coaches and also see content produced exclusively for the stadium’s in-house TV network, according to the team.

“Our new stadium will be an entertainment destination, and more than just a great place to watch a game,” said Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. “We were looking for the right company to work with on delivering an entirely new type of immersive fan experience with the latest cutting edge technology. With its consumer and professional HD technology expertise, Sony was the right brand.”

Sony is being designated as the “Official HD Television” of the Dallas Cowboys. Future plans and sponsorship opportunities may also include the use of Sony consumer electronics devices such as Blu-ray Disc players or Playstation systems, to add to the level of fan excitement during games.

The Sony displays will be used to show game content and other Cowboys-produced video and advertising elements. The Sony HD monitors, which range in size from 19 to 70 inches, will be connected via RS-232 interface to a Cisco IPTV network, for digital signage and other content delivery applications.

The stadium’s new HD control room has a Sony MVS-8000G production switcher and BVM and LUMA(R) LCD displays, with Sony HDC-1450 cameras, XDCAM(R) HD PDW-700 camcorders, and PDW-HD1500 decks also being used. The Sony equipment will capture and produce video for playback during games on the stadium’s LED screens and the HD displays throughout the venue.

“The Dallas Cowboys have a well-earned reputation for putting quality into everything they do, from the team on the field to the video material they produce,” said John Scarcella, president of Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Business Solutions Company. “Their brand and their vision of how entertainment can and should be delivered is a perfect match for our HD technology, and we’re extremely proud to be working with them on this beautiful new stadium.”

Sony Ericsson Posts Loss, Cutting 2,000 Jobs

sonyeric

Mobile-phone maker Sony Ericsson Friday said it would cut a further 2,000 jobs after poor customer demand and destocking by distributors and retailers pushed it into a loss in the first quarter. Executives said they believe the company has a plan and the right products to turn things around, and Sony Ericsson will focus on revenue rather than market share. You can check out the full Sony Ericsson Q1 FY2009 Earnings Announcement at Sony IR or directly at Ericsson’s website.

“As expected, the first quarter of this year has been extremely challenging for Sony Ericsson due to continued weak global demand. We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to profitability as quickly as possible,” Chief Executive Dick Komiyama said. “We are confident we have the right products and the roadmap to wow customers again,” he said.

All the world’s mobile device makers have been experiencing a slump in demand as the industry faces its worst-ever year. Nokia Corp., the world’s biggest maker of mobile devices, Thursday said the demand slump helped cause its first-quarter net profit to fall 90%. However, Sony Ericsson, a joint venture of Sweden’s Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson and Japan’s Sony Corp., has been one of the worst-hit manufacturers.

The company reported a €293 million ($385.9 million) net loss during the first quarter, from a €133 million profit a year earlier. Its pretax loss for the period ending March 31 was €370 million, in line with its profit warning last month when it said it expected a loss of between €340 million and €390 million. Sales slumped 36% to €1.74 billion from €2.7 billion a year earlier, as phone shipments fell to 14.5 million phones, 40% less than the 24.2 million phones shipped in the fourth quarter of last year. The average sale price was €120 compared with €121 in the fourth quarter. Its market share fell to 6% from 8% in the fourth quarter.

“We lost market share in Latin America, India and Africa, as these markets moved toward low-end phones,” Vice President Anders Runevad told a conference call. “We will look to focus on the revenue side rather than on market share.”

The company said the latest job cuts, from its workforce of around 10,000, will cost it €200 million, but it hopes its latest cost-cutting drive will cut operating expenses by €400 million by mid-2010. Some 2,000 workers left the company in a previous round of jobs cuts.

Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2009 will contract at least 10% from around 1.19 billion units in 2008, in line with Nokia’s prediction Thursday. Also echoing Nokia, Sony Ericsson executives said the de-stocking has eased but that doesn’t mean the fall in consumer demand has bottomed yet. Many in the market point to Sony Ericsson’s limited number of high-end converged devices similar to those that have been so popular to consumers, such as Apple’s iPhone and Nokia’s 5800 touchscreen as the root of its woes.

Although Sony Ericsson continued to blame lower demand and inventory destocking for the weak performance, Gartner said it believes that the company’s current portfolio is contributing to low-volume problems. “The ‘Idou’ device presented in Barcelona is certainly a step in the right direction for Sony Ericsson, but one cannot help but wonder if it will be too little too late, given it will only be on the market at the end of the year,” Gartner research analyst Carolina Milanesi said.

Another poor quarter has some suspecting that Ericsson is looking to reduce, if not get rid of, its 50% ownership in the handset company. Sony Ericsson says both parent companies continue to support it and are even willing to inject extra funding if needed.

“I think it is highly unlikely that Sony and Ericsson contribute more cash,” said West LB analyst Thomas Langer. “Giving Sony Ericsson more cash would be a big mistake because the only way out of this [poor profitability] is a closer connection to Sony. Mr. Langer said he expects that Ericsson is looking to minimize its exposure to Sony Ericsson and is aiming to offload or reduce its stake to Sony, possibly with the understanding that Ericsson contributes cash to Sony Ericsson as part of any deal.

Ericsson on Friday reiterated its support for Sony Ericsson, including giving more cash if needed.

Sony OLED TV Showcased

sony-oled-xel-2-21-inch

Sony was one of the exhibitors at Display Expo held in Japan just last week and of course they showcased their OLED TVs. One of them was a prototype 21 inch OLED panel with 1366 by 768 resolution. The contrast ratio is the same as my XEL-1 which is 1000000 to 1. The design has dramatically changed and looks futuristic in a way with the stand fully integrated. I believe the same sets were displayed earlier at CES.

No information was released when to expect this TV on the store shelves, but we suspect it will hit the stores at the end of Q4 of 2009 or early 2010.

Sony’s Touchscreen Walkman vs. Apple’s iPod Touch Pictures

3445057564_449dcf93c0

Here are some pictures courtesy of AV Watch that shows Sony’s Touchscreen Walkman (NW-X1050/NW-X1060*) next to and on top of an iPod Touch (similiar size to iPhone). The iPod Touch has a case and screen protector, but the difference in screen size is pretty noticeable. Also, it sure seems like that OLED screen is really amazing, despite the fact that the iPod Touch does have a screen protector on in these pictures. I won’t get into feature comparisons (most of us here understand which device has an advantage in certain aspects), but it is definitely good to see Sony stepping up.

Sony Walkman W202 Review

w202std

After around 3 weeks of good use of W202 player, I think it is time that I share some insights, likes and dislikes of this interesting wearable Walkman. Also check out the pictorial and the video below!

My main reason of owning this piece of technology was the simplicity it offers for an active life style, namely when I work out in a gym, I prefer to have no cords dangling around. I tried the bluetooth way on my Sony Walkman S710 and A820 series, however I had to keep up with charging both headphones and the player and sometimes I would get weird interferences, etc. The idea of having one unit, all in one set turned out to work perfectly for me.

After putting W202 through a few weeks of use under different conditions (doing cardio on an eliptical machine, running on a treadmill, lifting weights), the player certainly withstood all the tests and never slipped off. My concern was that when things get sweaty, I’d have to re-adjust it constantly, however that was not an issue at all – W202 stayed on and kept pumping my music as intended. And amazingly enough, the player never felt heavy on my ears after a prolonged use as it only weighs 35 g or 1.3 oz.

w202fit

The controls are situated so that it is easy to turn up the volume or skip to the next track with the help of jog dial. Jog dials have always had a thing with Sony products from being embedded within its VAIOs (like GRX series and other models) to its use in cell phones. There is a shuffle switch if you wish to utlize that function.

Let’s talk a lil about its Zapping feature that is exclusively available on this walkman. I found it pretty cool to tell you the truth, there is nothing like zapping through a few seconds of the track than clicking next on an ordinary player. Zapping function sort of  takes a snap shot of the track so that you are able to recognize it right away instead of listening from the very beginning of the track and wonder if it is the song you want to continue to enjoy. The player plays back song clips for about 4 seconds each (you may also switch to “Zapping Long” feature which will playback the song clip for 15 seconds). If the most recognizable passage of the song cannot be found, the song is played back from the 45 sec point from the beginning.  The sound effects when you activate zapping feature are pretty awesome (check it out in the video below to see what I mean), and by the way, activating is as easy as holding down the jog dial. So kudos to Sony for introducing this neat feature!

The build quality remains great, there is a magnet that holds two sides together when not in use and a white LED strip that serves as a status lamp and an OPR lamp indicator to let you know when your player needs to be charged. The neckband holds the left and right sides together of course and I do not ever see it being broken.

Sound quality is pretty good something I am used to expect from any Sony Walkman, so I won’t dwell too much on it here.

The charging stand is a nice addition and I am glad Sony decided to bundle it instead of selling it separately. If you ever misplace it, you can always use any USB cable to charge and transfer songs. Charging is quick and 3 mins of it will give you 90 mins of juice. You may transfer your music via Windows Media Player 11 or Content Transfer software that is also bundled which I found to use more frequently: drag and drop your WMA, MP3, AAC-LC or Linear PCM files and you are good to go. Within Content Transfer software there is a setting that allows you to activate the 12 Tone Analysis, a feature that is familiar to VAIO users.

Improvements that I would like to see are the following:

  • More storage space (currently you are limited by 2 Gigs)
  • Integrate Noise Canceling function (though EX headphones are still nice to have)
  • Bluetooth feature availability in case you want to pair it with your other BT gear

Check out this awesome overview video of Walkman W202:

CNET has published their review and they liked it! Check it out here.

Sony Insider’s Most Anticipated PS3 Games For The Rest Of 2009

The Playstation 3 is about two and a half years old at this point and has been subject to great accolades and controversy. However, what remains above and beyond the criticism is that it has truly delivered some incredible, hilarious, and satisfying gaming experiences for me. While I don’t have the time to play like I used to, there are still several games coming out in 2009 that I am very excited about. I decided to choose eight that I will most likely be purchasing and share, and invite you to write a list of your anticipated games in the comments.

t6

Tekken 6. Don’t even get me started with this franchise. I’ve been playing Tekken off and on since its inception, but my fondest memories are of Tekken 4 & 5. I probably spent the most time on the PS2 playing Tekken 4, and a considerable amount of time getting my ass kicked in Tekken 5 Online (for PS3). I always played Christie, which is odd, but I can make her spin like a top. Tekken 6, which will include the new features of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, will arrive on PlayStation 3 on October 27, 2009. Tekken 6 will have online modes, six new characters for a total of 42, tons of new features, and players are able to create and customize their own characters and take any in-game or created character online.

cod_modern_warfare_2_logo

Modern Warfare 2 was officially announced in February and a release date was later set for November 10, 2009. No other information about the game has been revealed. However, as this is the successor to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which has sold over 10 million copies, we can assume this will be an amazing follow-up to arguably one of the best FPS games of all time. I put a ton of hours into Call of Duty 4 and had some very memorable experiences – at one point, I only used a knife to kill and would go on ridiculous sprees while my friends on Ventrilo were in awe.

gow-iii-teaser-trailer-logo

God of War III is currently in development for the PlayStation 3. It is the fifth chapter in the series chronologically, after God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War, God of War: Betrayal and God of War II. Best Buy has the release date as 12/31/2009, which might be inaccurate and may see a 2010 release. God of War III takes place where the end of God of War II left off, with Kratos upon Gaia’s back eager to exact vengeance on the Gods and make them “suffer”. As seen in the trailers, the whereabouts of the Blade of Olympus are unknown, even though Kratos had been wielding the blade at the ending of God of War II. Little information has been released on the battle between the Gods and Titans that will explain the end of Greek Mythology. A more recent screen shot shows Helios on his knees with a bloodied face, Kratos is also in the picture grasping the god’s head, about to tear it off with his bare hands. Seen in a gameplay trailer are iron or bronze boots with wings on them that greatly augment Kratos’ acrobatic abilities. The wings and nature of the boots suggest that Kratos, at some point in the game, battles and/or kills Hermes, before taking his boots.

bfbc2_1

Battlefield: Bad Company 2, to be released on Fall 2009, is the sequel to my favorite war-based game of all time. Battlefield: Bad Company was the best first person shooter I’ve ever played – multiple classes, tons of unlocks, and destructable environments. Nothing is sweeter than blowing away a wall and finding enemies inside that just realized they’re dead meat. Or how about the thrill of locking onto a tank or other vehicle with a JDAM missle and guiding it in to destroy them while you’re perched hundreds of yards away behind a bush. I’ve spent too many hours in that game and I hope that this sequel doesn’t disappoint. We also give props to the upcoming Battlefield 1943 for PS3 that is coming this summer, another title I will be sure to buy.

uncharted1

Uncharted 2, coming in Fall 2009 via publisher Naughty Dog, will feature new gameplay mechanics, such as stealth action segments, and will change the climbing mechanic to allow free movement over walls, in a manner similar to Assassin’s Creed. Uncharted 2 follows the adventures of protagonist Nathan Drake as he uncovers the mysteries behind 13th-century explorer, Marco Polo, and the ships that he “lost” while returning home to Italy. Following him on his quest will be Chloe Frazer, a new character voiced by Claudia Black of Stargate SG-1 and Farscape. Drake is looking for the Cintamani Stone, a crystal which is said to grant the holder of it a wish, but someone else is also seeking the treasure.

The game is also stated to have no loading screens. Drake himself will have a darker side in this outing, and the player will learn what makes him a thief, hence the title. Bruce Straley, the game director for Uncharted 2, has revealed that the artificial intelligence of the enemies will be updated to match the new action-stealth gameplay. Enemies will have peripheral vision, so that they will hunt for Nathan if he briefly appears in their vision cone. Additionally, the enemies will interact with the environment more, following Nathan as he climbs on buildings or jumps from ledges. In addition to new gameplay mechanics, the game engine will also be revamped to take advantage of Naughty Dog’s increased understanding of the PlayStation 3′s architecture. Naughty Dog are aiming to maximize the utilization of the Cell’s SPUs, as their estimates for utilization in the first Uncharted were around 30%. As a result, the game is expected to have more realistic environments and animations.

bioshock2

BioShock 2 is a first-person shooter video game due for release in late 2009, developed by 2K Marin as the sequel to the critically-acclaimed BioShock. Set ten years after the events of BioShock, a number of towns around the world have been reporting kidnappings of young girls by attackers described as “thin”, with red lights often reported as either being worn by the attacker or spotted nearby in the sea. This single attacker, who is the Big Sister, one of the Little Sisters from the first entry in the series, has mechanised herself in a similar fashion to the Big Daddies — and has become the ruler of the underwater city of Rapture, which under her control has reached an equilibrium in which she “actively maintains the city’s infrastructure, and viciously hunts anyone down who disrupts the balance of power”; Tenenbaum, discoverer of ADAM and original creator of the Little Sisters, states that the Big Sister has begun kidnapping girls and turning them “into creatures… like her”.

Returning features from the first game include the ability for the player to regenerate (though not by the use of Vita-Chambers), and audio diaries. In addition to the single-player story, multiplayer will be a feature in BioShock 2, but this will not take the form of co-operative play.

final-fantasy-versus-xiii

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix exclusively for the PS3, and is due sometime in late 2009. The game focuses on a mysterious protagonist who is the last heir of a dynasty ruling over the only remaining city to control crystals. Under unforeseen circumstances, he makes a stand against marauders seeking to take the crystal as their own. Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, there is scarcely any information surrounding the gameplay and battle system of Final Fantasy Versus XIII because no formal footage has been shown by Square Enix of the gameplay online or within video game magazines.

Within recent Japanese gaming magazine interviews, Tetsuya Nomura (director) has stated that Versus XIII’s gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts battle system with some elements of a third-person shooter aspect similar to Square Enix’s Dirge of Cerberus. Versus XIII will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a darker, bleaker world that is intended to counter previous Final Fantasy installments. In contrast to previous Final Fantasy titles, Versus XIII had a greater display of graphic violence with an instance of blood.

maginternalscreenshot

MAG: Massive Action Game is the tentative name for an upcoming MMO shooter exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in development by Zipper Interactive. The game will utilize a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players in a server simultaneously, with users divided into 8-player squads. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game’s ranking system. Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay. The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

Basic battles with multiple vehicle options (from tanks and APCs to airplanes) will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play, with at least three factions being considered for inclusion; including American, European and Middle Eastern factions. The game will boast numerous classes for players to specialize in; including medics, commandos and field demolition specialists.
