Well, if you’ve been a faithful Sony Insider reader, the NW-X1000 Touchscreen Walkman series is no stranger to you. We predicted its debut, and slowly the details of the most feature-rich portable music player Sony has ever released came together. Sony Japan has finally acknowledged the existence of the X-Series Walkman by noting that Japanese consumers will be able to purchase a NW-X1050 (16gb; 40,000y) or a NW-X1060 (32gb; 50,000y) on April 25th. The Japanese Touchscreen Walkman will have the ability to receive broadcast TV signals. There has also been acknowledgment of a new and previously unannounced red color (that we predicted) and a special Japanese-only ‘Black Ice’ color only available at Sony Style Japan. All of the pictures in this post are super high resolution so click on them for a better view.

Sony Japan’s promotional introduction video:

Battery life (you can make estimates based on your usage):

  • Wireless web browsing: 4.5 hours (Noise-canceling features “off”, the set brightness “3″)

Other details we’ve never seen elsewhere include:

  • Screen has 262,144 colors
  • 5mW output
  • Built-in lithium ion battery, 1.5 hours to get 80% charge, 3 hours for full charge
  • Has same high-quality paint found in certain vehicles (meant to appear like ore)
  • Music, Photos and Video can all be drag n’ dropped into the player
  • Excellent information about browser capabilities (will be covered in a separate post)
  • Wallpaper is customizable, screen has 240×432 resolution
  • Can split video in detail in minutes and seconds by simply specifying the interval, to find the scene you want.
  • Easy and fast text input prediction capabilities
  • Three modes for noise cancelling (bus train / plane / room)
  • Digital noise cancelling without music playback
  • The ability to download recorded programs from Sony BDZ-X95/X100/A750/A950 Blu-ray/DVR units

According to Av forum the japanese model supports ATRAC with Sonicstage V. A lot of my library is in ATRAC (I need Gapless!!!). Any Idea if this might work with 4.3. Or if the operating system will be available in English??

I somehow sense some people are going to simply convert Japanese Yen into the US dollars and going to call it “too expesive,” which is not accurate price in the US.

It seems that Sony spend a long time and a lot research into developing this Walkman.

It is hard to determine where the price quote has come from, because the press release states indicates that both models price is open. However, I trust that the price quoted by Sony Insider is correct.

People have already started to convert the price to American, and complain about it being $100 more than the 32Gb iPod touch. The funny thing that the 32Gb iPod touch is $80 more expensive in Japan than America.

I noticed that the MDR-NWNC20 headphones do not have a release date. Those headphones will be great for people who have a S730F/S710F/S700F/A910/A820 walkman and need replacement headphones.

One thing that I did notice is this walkman still uses SonicStage and supports ATRAC.

    Again thanks for the information.

    Hi guys,

I’ve really been looking forward to this new Walkman and I am no disappointed, from all this info it looks and sounds fabulous!
However I do have one worry… I’m still an ATRAC3Plus user with my VGF-AP1L VAIO Pocket player, almost all my music is encoded in 256kbps in SonicStage 4.3.
Before Sony axed ATRAC, all their Japanese NW models also had English menu options. But that stopped once they introduced the ATRAC/SonicStage-less NWZ models. So all Japan-only NW models have since been Japanese language only. I’m really praying that the new NW-X series has support for an English menu so I can enjoy it with my existing ATRAC library. Anyone know if I will be able to do this?
Or will I need to re-rip my library… Or learn Japanese? Thanks in advance!

I would not hold my breath. I believe Japan remains the only country to support ATRAC, therefore software is written exclusively in Japanese. Trust me you are not alone in this situation. However I do not see why it would not work with an earlier SonicStage software either.

If we buy a Japanese model we have to contend with the useless TV feature. It would be nice to see some confirmation that it WOULD work with SS 4.3 though.

I’m going to wait a bit longer and not jump the gun on this one just yet – I want to see the English version when I get my hands on one at work, and then that Ice Black one with me mine! :D

    Hi o/
Has anyone heard if this will support proper bookmarking of audio files ?
“proper” meaning listen to podcast / audiobook, create bookmark, switch to some other track, turn off player etc.. then load bookmark later and continue listening to your podcast / audiobook.

As far as I can see no other Sony player support this, and details of this feature are usually hard to come by. Given that this has “direct download podcast support” you would hope it has decent bookmarking, but not a single mention of that anywhere I can see.

I listen to audiobooks and podcasts most days, and often get interrupted so bookmarking is a deal maker/breaker for me.

Anyone got any help with this ?

    TIA.

    Hi again,

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ve tried to do some further digging on the new Japanese X-series, and so far more luck on the English menus… But from checking out the (Google translated) Sony Japan website, the new Japan X-series is not only compatible with SonicStage V, but it also seems to indicate it should work with SonicStage CP (i.e. 4.0 to 4.4) – http://translate.google.com.hk/translate?prev=hp&hl=en&js=n&u=http://www.sony.jp/walkman/lineup/x_series/&sl=ja&tl=en

But I’m guessing the support for CP is limited to transferring the music, which would be perfectly adequate for me! I found an additional page which seems to have a breakdown of the difference in support between SS V and CP, but unfortunately it’s a graphic, so can’t be translated by Google. Anyone here able to read Japanese and do a translation for us? – http://www.sony.jp/support/pa_common/products/SonicStage/index.html

Anyway, this is mostly just speculation and guesswork on my part, until someone can definitively confirm this information, we’ll just have to wait. But I really do hope it maintains support for SS CP (4.3) and has an option for English menus on the device. The more I read about the X-series the more impressed I am. Looks like Sony did a really thought things through and did a particularly great job on this one!

P.S. I have to agree with Shanie and say the Japan exclusive ‘Black Ice’ is stunning.

    jerex,

Jp walkman x supports both ‘drag and drop’ and sonicstage.

explained neatly in this figure, http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/img/avw/docs/125/314/html/sony1m24.jpg.html
also says, drag and dropped files will NOT be visible in your sonicstage.

I cant comment on its support for sonicstage CP though
