Sony’s Media Go Now Available For Download

main

Media Go, announced at E3 2009, is now available for download makes it easier than ever to take your media with you wherever you go. Transfer music, photos, and videos from your PC to your Sony (PSP) or Sony Ericsson portable device, or import from your device to your PC. File conversion is hassle-free: Media Go automatically converts your media to the appropriate format for your device while maintaining the best possible quality. I wasn’t able to access the store until I chose that I wanted to access the PS Store with my PSP. I was able to enter the store without a PSP connected. However, I can’t download movies or television shows without a PSP connected.

With Media Go software, you can:

  • Easily transfer music, photos, audiobooks, audio clips, and videos to and from your Sony and Sony Ericsson portable devices
  • Subscribe to podcasts and video blogs and automatically download new episodes
  • Discover new video and audio podcasts from around the world in Media Go’s podcast directory
  • Rip songs from your CDs and transfer them to your Sony and Sony Ericsson portable devices
  • Look up album and artist information and artwork from Gracenote® MusicID®
  • Organize and search your entire media collection with ease
  • Add useful ratings to your media and use them to sort your media
  • Purchase new media from online stores, including:
    • Sony Ericsson PlayNow™ arena
    • Partner stores
    • PlayStation® Store
  • Automatically synchronize content like playlists, podcasts, and recently added media to your Sony and Sony Ericsson portable devices
  • See overviews of your devices so you can monitor total space used and total space available
  • Add SensMe™ data to your music files and create playlists based on the music’s mood and beats per minute
  • Play your media using several different views: compact, large-screen, or full-screen
  • Purchase, backup, and restore PSP™ games

Supported File Formats

Audio: .3gp, .flac , .m4a, .m4b, .mp4, .mp3, .wav, .wma
Video: .3gp , *.avi, .m4v, .mnv, .mp4, .mov, .o4v (OMA), .odf, .qt, .wmv
Image: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tga, .tif, .tiff

If you have media files in your library that are supported by your device but Media Go does not play, the files are categorized as Other Files. These files are still available for transfer to your device by Media Go, but are not re-encoded and not playable by Media Go: .3ga, .aac, .amr, .awb, .imy, .ra, .rm, .mid, .svg, .swf, and .xmf.

*Some encoding formats, such as DivX and Xvid often use an .avi file extension. Support for files encoded with these formats may require you to have the appropriate MPEG-4 video codecs installed on your computer.

Great GUI! Finally Sony's software is a joy to play with.

    Thanks for the link!

Okay, so how is this different than the Media Manager and Content Transfer software? How many times is Sony going to produce another iteration of this type of software? At least Apple has stuck with iTunes for the last 8+ years.

  • Joe Edwards

I guess I just answered my question. No support for walkman mp3 players? What the heck? WHY NOT provide software that will support ALL the Sony devices. It just doesn't make any sense. Back to using content transfer for my A818

  • Joe Edwards

I was finally able to get Media Go to recognize my A818. It will transfer pictures and music…but OH SO SLOWLY. No conversion is taking place, therefore it should not be nearly this slow.

u r a big crybaby media go is not a person

  • Linux user

It's nice that it will transcode formats, but what about people without Windows? I wish all Sony devices would support OPEN media formats, including OGG Vorbis, Theora, and FLAC. This software can play those, but the PSP itself cannot.

  • MGDevTeamPerson

Media Go will continue to iterate, with additional features and device support in each rev.

1.0 worked with SEMC phones, 1.1 works adds support for the PSP and other new features…this will continue.

If you have feature requests or issues of any type you would like to be considered for inclusion in a future version of Media Go, please make them known. The best way to reach the dev team with requests/brainstorms/suggestions is: In Media Go, Help>Sony on the Web>Send Feedback. This isn't tech support, please note- this is a request form only.

Thanks for checking out Media Go. Your input is valued and we'd love to have your help in improving the experience at any/every level.

So far, it's working great for my W890i. Finally, it supports ripping CDs at AAC 320kbps compared to SE Media Manager where it was capped at 256kbps.

I downloaded and tried it out yesterday. From what I have experienced so far, it seems to be an improvement compared to Sony Media Manager. I do need to use it some more to be able to judge it better. And like others have said I really think they should have made it compatible with Walkmans

I have been able to use it with my PSPs without any problems OTHER THAN the fact that the transfer speeds are so SLOW! A 30 second video took over 5 minutes to transfer. Yet this same video took a few seconds with drag/drop. Similar speeds using Double Twist.

I can upload to my PC at normals speeds, so I know it is not the HDD or the ProDuo card (drag/drop works fine). The slowdown is in the software itself.

WHY is it so SLOW? There is no conversion required for these files so I am at a loss. I think I will have to uninstall this software as it is practically useless.

I use Media Manager PRO for PSP (PlayStation Portable) to copy content to my device, which is a fantastic program, though I was recently FORCED to upgrade to the new “Media Go” program because the old software has been blocked from accessing the PlayStation Store…

Gee, thanks Sony – make me PAY for the software and then FORCE me to upgrade to free software.

Anyway, Sony ripped me off, that's to be expected from a big company like Sony (I could add more to this with regards to Sony and their attitude to customers over the last couple of years in comparison to the past, but that's a whole other thread!)…

The point is, the software is rubbish!

I mean, it has its good points – it seems to convert & copy content quicker, it looks prettier, it's more flexible with custom folders…

But there's still a LOT wrong with it!

It's prone to regular crashing, it's (slightly) confusing to use (in comparison to the old software), customers that paid for the “pro” version of the former software essentially gave Sony money for nothing and it lacks support for Sony's Walkman products (which also come with a “Media Manager/Media Manager PRO” program, to optionally use)!

Worse-still, it won't start now (even after a complete re-installation), according to forums the world over, start-up problems are VERY, VERY common (in fact, most users I've seen appear to have some sort of start-up problem) and users that have bothered to call Sony Computer Entertainment in various countries (including here) have been told that (wait for it!) “THERE IS NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR MEDIA GO”!

So let's go over this one more time shall we?

I PAY for the “pro” version of their “Media Manager” program, which works like a charm with NO problems EVER; then I'm FORCED to upgrade to inferior (though potenially better) software and THEN told that Sony AREN'T offering ANY technical support?

And you wonder why no one is buying PlayStation products anymore (at least with Nintendo I'd get technical support!)…

Oh, and in case someone from Sony actually wants to pay attention to their customers and help me out (plus the hundreds of other users experiencing similar problems…), here's the exact error message:
    “The application could not start.
    Initializing pre-encode manager…
Error Code: 0x8004e08b, Startup code: 31″.

  • Mark Muldoon

Was more than happy with the first Media Manager, especially being able to upload books into the browser of the PSP. Was less than impressed by the second version of Media Manager deleting this and being oddly sensitive to various files that had been fine with the first version.

Absolutely furious with the USELESS Media Go.

It does not run for more that two minutes without killing itself. It doesn't hang or trigger Windows Error Reporting, it just disappears off the taskbar and screen. When it is running it grabs both cores and runs them up to 100% so “background indexing” is arrant nonsense. The machine is on Win XP Pro SP3 and patched to the hilt. It meets the miniumum spec easily. And of course there is no connection to the PlayStation Store – which is the second laugh – nor is there any support you can call on. So, Sony can't get my money, can't find out why and can't fix it.

I had updated with the hope that I could update all the music on my PSP. Frankly it's easier to just drag and drop into the file system.

When will there be Linux support for this sort of thing?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gregory-Opera/641889108 Gregory Opera

    Hey guys,

Although it's not OFFICIALLY supported, Sony Walkman products appear to have perfect compatibility with the new Media Go – I've used it to copy music, videos and photos to my Sony Walkman NWZ-A826 with not a single problem and complete compatibility!

I agree with what others have said below and elsewhere though – Media Go should natively and officially support ALL of Sony's multimedia products, instead of having 3 or 4 different software titles (particularly for people like myself that only purchase Sony products, where available)…

Oh and in case anyone was wondering about a solution for the all-too-common start-up problems in Media Go, I found a solution in the (official) PlayStation Forums (courtesy of “art12345″):

“That may be due to a corrupt file. The help file says you can hit ctrl+shift when you start the app (as soon as you double click the icon) to clear out Media Go's internal files and start fresh.”

Sony Ericsson's Media GO is CRAP! Avoid at all cost!
Not much better than previous Media Manager software!

Does NOT support Drag n Drop from PC into software!
    Edit files is VERY difficult!
Video conversion takes a L-O-N-G time and transfer time is long as well!
    It's NOT user friendly!

Apple's iTunes is the THE BEST media software! If only Sony could COPY some of iTunes User Friendly features!!

  • w995

I have a w995 phone and Media Go comes with the package. I agree with the other posts, its not user friendly and SLLOOOWWW in transferring files.

Another think I don't like about it is, you have to connect the phone to encode the files. They should allow encoding files to a folder in the computer then have those files transfer later. That way I can go out for a while with my phone, leaving the pc do the encoding.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gregory-Opera/641889108 Gregory Opera

Yep, I second that – we need to be able to encode files WITHOUT the compatible device connected to our computers!!!

As for encoding, I'm not sure what everyone's on about because I find it somewhat faster than the previous “Media Manager” titles…

  • mogwaai

Looks a better product than Media Manager but all my files are OGG VORBIS so completely useless to me. Rather use MediaMonkey to do my management until some support for my music is included in the product.

  • Crinale819

is the media go can convert and transfer downloaded games onto the psp?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gregory-Opera/641889108 Gregory Opera

Yes, Media Go can access the PlayStation Store in your region, allowing you to purchase and download content, as well as copy it to your PSP (PlayStation Portable), PSP (PlayStation Portable) Slim & Lite or PSP Go!…

Great software, the only one that could actually replace WMP for me and be a substitute for Amarok as it's not available for Windows.

  • ifucantfindit

Media Go currently (July 31 2010) works with Sony Walkmans, tested with NWZ-S639F and NWZ-A816. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Uses MTP for transfer, transcodes videos as needed. I was happily surprised.

  • Searchman

Media Go installs and runs fine on my WinXp Home sp3 pc. But fails to transfer to my psp1000. Gets up to 10% and drops. Could not update to 6.31. Had to use internal updater instead. Can copy through my computer.
