Sony To Replace NWZ-W202′s Affected By Sweat/Moisture Issue

It wasn’t very long after our eye-opening article “Sony’s NWZ-W202 Wearable Walkman Can’t Sweat It” appeared that Sony’s Marcy Cohen (Senior Manager of Communications) stopped by the blog to leave a note about the situation. It appears that Sony is fully aware of this issue and will be offering a replacement solution before the end of the month for all affected users. Sounds great! Keep an eye on Sony Insider on June 30th for more details. Here’s the official response:

We’d like to assure your readers that Sony makes every effort to ensure that our products not only meet our own strict quality standards, but also support a positive customer experience. The comments about the W series Walkman (NWZ-W202), which has been available in the US and Europe since April 2009, involved a small number of W series Walkmans reportedly malfunctioning following exposure to sweat or other liquids.

We take all customer feedback seriously, so we have implemented additional safeguards to promote sweat/moisture resistance. We are confident that these measures will ensure all W series Walkman models support increased customer satisfaction and meet our high quality standards.

We will provide information for contacting Sony Customer Support and replacement unit availability by Tues. June 30th. We sincerely apologize to our customers for any inconvenience.

    i have yet to have any problem with mine, we'll see. maybe the ones bought in Canada is different? haha wishful thinking!

    What do Sony intend to do? I was unaware of the issues with this MP3 player when originally purchased. My original unit lasted 3 weeks before losing all function. Half of its 3 week life was spent without being able to turn the volume down as pressing the -vol button would turn the unit off. The outlet store where I purchased the unit from replaced it without question. The replacement unit then lost all function during its first outing! The Sony NWZ-W202 to date has been a big dissapointment and I only hope Sony come up with a solution. Will the replacement unit be redesigned to stop malfunctioning faults?

    Yeah, quite a few where returned to us because of the same issue… Although some people sweat more than others, so that's why it's only effecting a few.

      Well I actually made sure I always wiped mine and kept it clean and dry. But it broke anyways.

    What's funny is that I mentioned moisture 2 months ago right after merely looking at pics of the unit in the review, yet the designrers or someone above them counting costs don't take the basics into consideration in design, which is disappointing, especially with the CE Walkman heritage of Sony.

    Mine gets fed up with my computer. It killed the first one and the new one was fine at first but then does not recognise it won't charge it and stuns it. I then have to reset it.

    I hope they sort it out and keep replacing them as my running is definitely improving because of it.

    Does it have to be charged from the computer? Or is there an “in-wall” charger?

    I originally purchased one of these back in May. The concept is brilliant and as I am a massive Sony fan and have resisted the i-Pod with a passion I was very pleased with my first experience of it. Then I used it in the Gym (just once) and it went haywire. I called Sony support and initially they tried to tell me it wasn designed for the Gym and certainly not if you sweat. A massive contradiction of their Marketing campaign – the upshot was I got a refund. Having read the reports that this only affected a small batch, I recently bought another one which also failed. I returned this and had a replacement ………. guess what – same problem. For Sony to say that only a few of these products cause problems is effectively implying all of its customers are dim witted. Even now I woudl buy anther one if I could be certain it woudl work but I doubt very much that will ever be the case.

    its a horrible product!!!!!! just stopped functioning after a few months of purchase!!! and for your kind information….i don't sweat much!!!! so now u know how stupid a product this isss!!!!!!!!!

    the problem is that the usb port does not have a rubber plug to protect it , water gets inside and haywires the player , mine got really hot , then the volume started maxing out and then it died , sony replace it , i put a little piece of duct tape on the new one no problem so far , lets cross fingers

    Have had 3 of these players. First 2 stopped working after first time use (computer did not recognise them) and now the third one stopped after 1 month use and the reseller does not know anything about the issue.

    Do not buy this product!!!

    good day,hi im karen from philippines. my dad brought me the same unit and i also experiencing to much sweat and moisturing.i also actually got allergy in my face at right side were the metal magnet is located.And i noticed that one of the screw got rust due to moist.pls help me…..thanks

    it was well functioning
    yesterday while playing the songs i press the reset botton,and from then my device is nt recognised by the laptop or computer..
    while connecting to pc it gives popup mtp device found again and again

    plz help

    I’ve had mine for a couple of years now, and it’s been brilliant – then all of a sudden it won’t recharge anymore!  I have a second one that was for my wife, and it charges fine, but BOOM, after a nice long walk – it just won’t recharge!  What do I do?  Send it where for a replacement/refund?
