Touchscreen Walkman Available In USA – Thoughts After A Few Days?

walkman black ice

So, the fabled Sony X-Series Touchscreen Walkman, NWZ-X1051 (16gb) and NWZ-X1061 (32gb) has been available to US consumers for a few days now. After all of the hype, the details, and the speculation, what do you think? Can someone also comment on the Slacker radio experience? I have the application for the iPhone and it is better than Pandora in my opinion. How about the web browser? Is the noise canceling great?

p.s. SonyStyle USA’s model number for this device is the longest we’ve seen yet – NWZ-X1061FBSMP. Wow!

Btw, is that picture by you? I noticed that headphone is MDR-EX700. That's SL version right? Because, LP has L-mini plug. I see a straight mini plug in this pic, which means you are not using extension cord. I am only asking b/c I prefer I shaped mini plug over L, where the latter can in way w/ the buttons positioned on top (X series); and I am wondering if there is LP version with I shaped mini plug.

Just played around with one at the sony style store. They still didnt have it in stock, but said it would be available starting this friday hopefully.

    Some toughts
    1. As everyone has been saying, the capacitive oled screen is beautiful. screen response is really good.
    2. the OS is really snappy. I am happy to see that this walkman also starts and switches off instantly. no waiting for 15 to 20 seconds for it to start. keep the play button pressed for about a second and it instantly comes to life. Irrespective of how small this thing is, i always loved this about sony walkmans.
    3. the slacker app. i hadnt read any reviews about it anywhere. so i really wanted to try this out. and i have mostly good things to say! as everyone knows, rather than playing the music over the air(like the iphone/touch), the slacker app downloads all the music. the demo unit had 3 stations preloaded (todays hits, alternative , r&b). from what i understood from teh error messages when trying to refresh the stations, i learnt the following
    a. there is a device id associated with teh player and you need to link that device id to your slacker account online. (no idea how). the demo device didnt have it linked, so i couldnt refresh the stations.
    b. on the free account, it seems there is a limit of 3 stations. this is what i understood from one of the on screen messages. though i maybe wrong.
    c. the sound quality is really great for online radio. i have used slacker with the iphone and their web application. and i must say the quality of audio is much better on the walkman. dont know if its the sony magic, or slacker has better encoded audio for devices that cache the stations (anyone used the slacker portable or the blackberry app can shed some info here)
    d. you cannot use any other feature when using the slacker app(like the iphone platform). the only thing available is the menu to tweak the audio settings. apart from that, if you press the home button, the slacker app exits. kinda disappointed by this. and weirdly, it takes some time to close the slacker app. mroe than it takes to start it !!

    4. wrt to the sound quality of the walkman itself, i found it better than a806. i was using the shure scl2 earplugs, and the player just sounded warmer to me. since i didnt have my music on it, i couldnt really comapre much. but then again, for sound quality there are already many reviews out there which do a much better job then wt i would do :)

    5. the browser is crap PERIOD.

    6. no way to try podcasts.

    7. the fm couldnt get any signal as teh store was deep inside a mall.

    8. photo viewer is similar to wht i ahve on the a806. didnt see any new feature. though i didnt spend much time with it either.

thats my 2 cents on the player after playing with it for about 20 minutes

I live in the UK but i have found the player to be a godsend for anyone that wants to listen to music while out and about on public transport as with the noise canceling you don't hear anything that you don't want to. One problem i am having is that i cannot get the album art to appear on the files… Unless i transfer from PS3!

Does anyone know if it works with Rhapsody to go subscriptions ?

  • Zizone

Yeah, it should work with Rhapsody to go. It works for Napster to go for sure.

As you mentioned, PS3 works perfectly for transferring music. I also use WMP 11 and it works fine for transferring music with album arts.

The Slacker applications works great. It has 3 pre loaded channels Todays hit, hip hop.r$b and 80's,90;s and Today. IT take like 20 min on my network to refresh it. You got like 30days to use slacker without registering it to an account, and once you do it..
The fm radio is very nice as well. I have been using it for over a week, and Its really nice. However I still didnt get how to convert the video for its resoloution(which is 432*240 right?)
