[...] But the e-reader race has never been about hardware, so much as just about breaking into mainstream consciousness: the Kindle, for all its name recognition, isn’t that popular, either as a purchase or as a subject online—our Kindle posts don’t do the traffic that posts about a new phone, gaming device or even TV might garner. They’re expensive and single-purpose, and you have to spend even more on intangibles before you can even use them. To really take off, they need to be cheap, and approachable. If Sony can pair a decent, $200 reader with its bulging free ebook library, it might be onto something. [Hi-PDA via Sony Insider] [...]

when are these things going to come with a colour screen? Itss not just copies of jane austin you want this for, but the early adopter nerds want copies of VBA for beginners, gardening for beginners etc...

I know this will mean a need for a much larger memory and batteries no ddoubt however this does seem to be a limiting factor..

I've had a Reader for over 2 years now (500, then 505) and *never* wanted or needed a dictionary, annotation, etc. Just like I don't need them when I (frequently) read paper books. The Sony Readers are more like 'real' books, except that you can carry hundreds of them wherever you go in a package smaller than a single trade paperback (and much mor elegant than the Kindle). No need for wireless--I can load a year's worth of books in one short connected session with my computer. Wireless download is overrated. I mostly hook up my Reader to the computer every couple of weeks to transfer newly-borrowed ebooks from my library. (What, the Kindle can't do that? You actually *buy* all your e-books? Oh, but you can buy them *wirelessly* errr, no thanks.) ANd the 3+ weeks of battery life on the Reader make it seem even more like a book, rather than like a cellphone/laptop that always needs recharging and will die on you when you least want it to. The Reader will last for a long vacation with no need to carry a charger along.

But, the 600 does meet several of your requirements. It does have a touchscreen, annotation, and built-in dictionary. I'm not sure if you can show/hide notes, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't. Believe me, you really don't need wireless. Battery life is much more important for day-to-day use.
