Sony Brings XBR10 Series Into Existence

XBR10

Sony USA introduced its XBR10 line up in the form of 46 and 52 inch ultra slim panels aka KDL-46/52XBR10. Its beauty will definitely win a lot of hearts and its slimness will awe those who like the glass floating design. Talking about its design, these models definitely resemble ZX1 model released early this year and newly announced ZX5 series in Japan definitely look the same.  What’s new in this offering: wireless media receiver has finally arrived to the shores of the USA (EU and JP model of ZX1 already had the wireless capability with 1080i support) that will stream 1080p goodness to the picture perfect display. Sony has utilized media receiver units before with XBR LCD and Plasma models back in 2003-2005, even though they were wired it was still a great solution to get your AV equipment hidden while the LCD panel sat or hung nicely on the wall.

Cnet reports the following key features of the new XBR10:

Key features of the Sony KDL-XBR10 series:

  • 1,920×1,080 (1080p) native resolution
  • Four HDMI inputs
  • Sony’s Motionflow 240Hz processing
  • Edge-lit LED backlighting
  • Quoted contrast ratio of over 1,000,000:1
  • Bravia Internet Widgets, powered by the Yahoo Widget Engine
  • DLNA-compliant; stream music, photos, and video from other DLNA servers
  • USB input
  • RS232C input
  • 46-inch KDL-46XBR10 | $4,500 list price
  • 52-inch KDL-52XBR10 | $5,000 list price
  • Both models available in October

As you see, pretty much what we have reported earlier the above specs match. I am disappointed with a price tag, it was widely rumored that Sony has moved away from Triluminos LED technology to save on production and make it more affordable for the consumer, however I don’t see this happening, as Sony XBR8 with True LED technology can be picked up for much less, of course you would sacrifice in size, however at the end – the PQ matters most!

It is a beautiful set however…

i am a huge fan of SONY products and this is just awesome.. they should price it lower to give better competition to panasonic, toshiba, lg and samsung.. i love sony but they have to be very aggressive in there price strategy now.. i have a sony bravia and it is awesome and better than panasonic, toshiba, lg and samsung.. but panasonic, toshiba, lg and samsung is giving sony a run for its money because they are cheaper.. i like panasonic and toshiba but i hate samsung and lg.. come on sony show the world that you are still the BEST.. what is wrong with you.. ?

How sad for those of us who actually consider picture quality ahead of styling that, with its XBR10, Sony has decided to follow Samsung in deploying side-lit LED backlighting. Visit an electronics store with a robust selection of LCD TVs and look at this year's 7-, 8-, or 9-series LED backlit models from Samsung next to Sony's now two-year old XBR8 that uses locally-dimmed LED backlighting. There's no comparison. Sony's XBR8 line (called X4500 overseas) still retains the best-looking picture of any LCD television, hands down.

Here's the folly of Sony's decision to bring the XBR10 to market outside of Asia (where lemmings still dutifully buy electronics for status over end-user experience): people willing to spend US$4000+ want to know they are getting the best image available, while people who are dazzled by slick, thin styling can find what they want for half the price from Samsung. As long as Sony continues to make their XBR8 sets available, perhaps we should read it as an admission that their newer fare is still not as good.
