Don't bother. Sony is screwing everyone with a year old laptop or desktop by not providing updated drivers. I will NEVER again purchase another Sony laptop or desktop. Now I have a $3,300 paperweight due to the fact it must run Vista forever.

I don't know… I thought windows 7 support all drivers that are supported by Vista. It's just that Sony is not responsible if it doesn't work but win 7 should work w/ current drivers as far as I understand. In addition, it's saying that you don't get free upgrade to 7.

Upgraded the Sony Netbook from XP to W7. Had very little problems except for the Fn keyboard functions became inoperable, something to do with “Sony Firmware Extension Parser”. There is a work-around though, needless to say it wasn't Sony that provided it.

Hey! Sony people. I don't know where to send this so if i'm in the wrong site can you please forward this to the concerned division? Thanks. I recently bought (23 May 2009) my Sony VAIO CS26G here in Indonesia I've chosen Sony VAIO over Toshiba Satellite even if I paid twice the price because I know I can rely to this brand. But recently (24 Oct) I went to sony service center here which is very far to check on the noise I'm hearing when I open my laptop and according to the technician it's the cooling fan. Made in China, not so reliable according to him. In just 5 months I have to go to a service center? Better do something about this. I saw too many (around 12 or so) VAIO there to be fix most of it same problem as mine.
I hope I can get some consolation on this like include me to lower price upgrade to windows 7 OS. I noticed as I browse the internet that those who bought laptop with vista OS from 26 June 2009 to January 2010 are only legible to get a Windows 7 upgrade for $15. Is there anyway it can be adjusted so I can be included? I hate this Vista OS as if I still have my pentium 4 1.2hz with 1gb ram. This VAIO CS26G IS SUPPOSE TO BE FAST FOR I HAVE CENTRINO 2, NVIDIA 9300, 3GB RAM so why I feel like having pentium 4? As microsoft promised that windows 7 will be a lot like XP, that I like. I'm used to XP very reliable.
Should you give me the chance of having that upgrade lower price will I have no problem installing it? Will I still keep/use the rest of the bundled softwares?

    Your Fanatic Sony Brand User,

(I do have Sony Trinitron TV 21inch 15 years old and still functional, Sony camcorder, PSone, PS2, PSP, SonyEricsson Celphones K700i, K300i and W350,) soon I'll buy PS3.

Not entirely true. For example, I have an FZ series and all I needed was the nVidia 8400GT driver but Sony would not provide it stating my hardware configuration couldn't fully support Win 7. I still feel that's a false statement because the hardware will support it, but my driver needed updating. I do not equate drivers to hardware, rather more of a firmware. Without the driver, Win7 was severely limited because it would only run off the standard VGA driver, which means no Aero, sleep mode, display settings, energy savings, etc. nVidia would not provide the driver because these graphics cards are OEM, therefore leaving Sony solely responsible for keeping everything up-to-date. Luckily, someone did the legwork to find out the only thing needed was a simple mod to the standard nVidia inf file…after that, the driver update from nVidia's site worked fine. Almost all of my other drivers are Windows drivers, but I don't have many complaints about any of them. Most of the drivers from Vista will work with Win 7 (just make sure you're getting the right version, of course, i.e. 64-bit). I do agree, though, that Sony's support is absolutely horrible. It took me about 5 minutes to implement this solution, so it's not like it would have cost Sony a boatload of money in development/maintenance…all they're left to do is post the updates online. I have always been extremely happy with my Vaio and now I am even happier with it since Win 7 is so smooth (compared to Vista), but I will also never buy a Sony again. You shouldn't have to spend that kind of money only to rely on yourself for this type of support…luckily I have a niche for all things technical so the most time-consuming part for me was finding the right forums.

My Vaio is VGN-SZ79GN and it was running under Vist 32-bit very badly. I’ve upgraded its OS to Windows 7 64-bit, now is working very nicely, with just a minor problem. Its built in camera and microphone is not working. I need to get drivers for them, but I do not know how. Please let me know what to do.

I have had problems with upgrading my Sony VAIO ever since I purchased it. It would not upgrade to Vista without a lot of problems and PURCHASED software from Sony. When I asked about driver updates for the hardware that was in the machine when I purchased it, I was told that SONY did not support third party hardware. Now, when I asked to get infor on upgrading to Windows 7, I was told “You can't upgrade to windows 7″ with no explaination. So I have a top of the line paperweight that will have to run XP until it dies. With this kind of customer support I see no reason to ever buy a sony computer again. I will stick with Toshiba.

i have the same problem … could you solve it ? i have also “base system device” driver error…

  • hendrikpieters said:

    Yes,
I did a full restore back to clean Vista, and then did the upgrade immediately.
You have to go back to the Vista BEFORE any updates & s/w are installed.
Would have been nice if they put that in the upgrade manual.
Even then things do not go smooth, but you can get around that.

    And to ATI:
pse throw away the stupid Catalyst & allow us to switch off hardware acceleration.
For gamers: Stay away from ATI because of incompatibilities caused by this to Games, Java apps etc.

I was getting the error that nvidia didn't find a compatible device on my computer after installing the windows 7 driver. Sony support didn't work as well. So I went to other sony sites in different countries. They always say that the computer is different and it won't work…but as long as you can find the equivalent specs (in this case the graphics driver) you can install it. Yes, windows 7 is able to get the original drivers, but I wanted an updated one….so I found it for my vaio vgn-z520 nvidia 9300m gs. Like I mentioned, you just have to find an equivalent graphics card model

  • charminglee said:

Were you able to get driver for built-in camera and the memory card reader (Win 7 64-bit)? I also have an FZ VAIO with Vista Busines 32-bit, but I had trouble with those two components when upgrading to Win 7 64-bit. Other devices seem to be working fine. Please kindly share your knowledge. Thanks!!

  • DHuge said:

I didn't have to do anything for the memory card reader…as a matter of fact, on Vista it would not read SDHC, but after installing Win 7 it does, so that was a great surprise! The driver is Microsoft version 6.1.7600.16385.

I have tried almost everything to get the camera to work, but with no luck. Everything in Windows says it's working properly, and when I test the camera with Skype, the green light by the camera turns on Skype says that it's working, but I get a black window and that's it…no idea what's going on, but it could be a codec issue. I've probably tried 4 different Ricoh drivers, but all have failed at the device manager level. If you find anything that works, it'd be great to know!

  • charminglee said:

Well, Win 7 did not find driver for my memory card reader but I was able to use the old Vista driver for the camera. The camera is working okay when tested with Skype. It's showing as “SONY Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC8″ under Imaging device if you check with the Device Manager. For the problem you have, I guess that you may have a VCC4 or VCC6 driver installed. You may need to use the VCC8 driver to make it work.

BTW, what's the description for your memory card reader under the Device Manager if you use the driver from Microsoft?

I downloaded the most recent driver package from nVidia's site and then modified the inf file (in notepad). I'll try to find the link with the exact directions on how to do it.

  • DHuge said:

Ok, ITGuy83…you just reading these forums to pass the time? Cause that wouldn't be nerdy at all.

  • DHuge said:

I thought I tried that driver, but could be wrong. I'll give it another shot and see how it goes.

You may want to consider trying to find a Texas Instruments driver for the memory card reader also. I know it's TI hardware and I do remember seeing posts about other people talking about that. If I find a good link I'll post it.

  • srp46 said:

I had the same problem with my desk top all-in-one (VGC-LT35E). I learned that Sony treats it like a laptop. I had taken it in to Fry's for hardware problems and when he finished I asked about upgrading to Win 7 and told him about the “incompatibility driver” issue. He said this finding was common and that he was sure it would upgrade. I bought the upgrade, he installed it, and used the Vista video driver – works great! Sony had told me my computer was NOT upgradeable to Win 7. They don't seem to know what they're doing over there.

  • DHuge said:

    Check out this link:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/28528-nvidia...

That should resolve it for you and you won't have to modify the inf file yourself. Hopefully it works if you weren't already able to resolve it.

I see a lot of people have different problems with the windows 7 upgrade. But Sony doesn't seem to post any help anywhere. The upgrade was provided as a part of the purchase of a laptop within a certain time before the awaited release, therefore it should be supported from Sony as well as the other software already in the machine at the purchase. I have a VGN-SR49 and some funcion keys stopped working as well as the switch keys. Not as big a problem as some others have, but especially the switch-keys were a part of what Sony themselves thought was special with this laptop. And now they don't bother if people can use them or not.
With the prize you pay for this high-profile brand, you should really expect a more pro-active support, i.e. that Sony themselves find out workarounds and posts them for everyone (or, actually, even mails them to all registered buyers). Now it feels like I bought it from someone in the street who takes the money and disappears.

Why on earth we can't make a clean installation in the first place!?
    1. Unable to find or run the drivers even if I try to install same windows version comes with the product!
    2. It takes about a day to re-install the operation system from recovery dvd's with all those unnecessary softwares that I will never use; and
    3. it takes another day to clean those unwanted softwares to uninstall.
    I really hate it.
