Sony Ericsson “XPERIA X10” vs. Apple “iPhone 3G S” Specs Comparison

xperiax10iphone

Sony Ericsson has a very strong play coming in 2010 – the XPERIA X10. With specifications straight out of Star Trek, this just might be the device to propel the Google Android operating system ahead of iPhone 3G S. The new XPERIA X10 (specs courtesy Sony Ericsson) is their most powerful phone ever, and we put it head to head with the iPhone 3G S (specs courtesy of Apple) in a detailed specs comparison. The North American market has been dominated by the iPhone 3G, and it is now even more powerful than before with the updated S version. Both phones have rich application environments – the iPhone with App Store, and the XPERIA X10 with the Google Android Market. We’ve read that the XPERIA X10 will come to the USA courtesy of AT&T (and labeled as the XPERIA X10a) in 2010; this could be one interesting matchup. We’ve highlighted the winner of each category in Green, the loser in Red, and neutral/subjective specs are in Yellow. Any categories left in White we couldn’t make a decision based on incomplete data, or felt was too trivial. Please leave a comment with anything we’ve missed.

Please remember that there are some specifications and experiences not listed here. Click to learn more about the XPERIA X10 (link includes movies) and its incredible user interface that is light years beyond any other Android phone. Click to learn more about the advanced operating system experience of the iPhone 3G S. I have used an iPhone 3G for a very long time and believe its an incredible mobile experience. This will be tough for the consumer – it is truly important that both devices are tested (when possible) to ensure the right choice. The XPERIA X10 is already shaping to be such a “wow” product though..

Sounds pretty interesting. Personally, I think the first company to make a device like the Iphone but only thinner and lighter will rule the day.
It's nice to see Android competing, but when the form factor is basically either a knock-off or very similar, I doubt that having “also ran as” features will propel a current smartphone user to switch.
It's time for someone to really ignite things like Apple did three years ago and like Motorola did prior to that with the Razor.

Don't forget that the XPERIA X10's display is AMOLED. But the 64k colour limit is definitely a pain. I hope they upgrade Rachael to Android 2.0 before they launch it though.

Sadly, unless the price is the same as an iphone, the specs won't matter I think.

Should change it to Android 2.0

“all-day battery life” – only Sony can invent so funny tech specs. lol

I'm rather curious as to where this “superior 3D acceleration” comes from, especially when it's not true…

  • Facebook User

I have observed the iPhone 3G S in real life and was satisfied with the 3D gaming performance, however, after watching several videos of the XPERIA X10 playing 3D games its clearly obvious. The processor and beefy hardware will ensure a superior 3D experience. How could it not?

  • Facebook User

I was amused by this as well, and hope Sony can publish battery specifications soon.

If Sony Ericsson can tie the XPERIA X10 to AT&T, it would be realistic to see this phone offered for $299 – $399 with a two year plan.

  • Facebook User

Is it AMOLED? Can you show me a credible source stating so? I have seen conflicting reports and was unable to state it as fact.

1.) I've got both @work and have run my own code on both and the 3G S is able to outperform the X10 (it's between 20-60% faster)

2.) Pretty much most stuff you see running on the 3G S is targeted at the iPhone/iPhone 3G which are much less capable, so the 3G S isn't really working hard (MBX-Lite+VGP vs. SGX535+VXD).

3.) In all other categories the X10 is more capable, it's just that the GPU in the QSD8250 (even @1GHz) isn't as capable as the SGX535 in the 3G S.

The 8.1 mega-pixel camera offers the same features and functionality found in many consumer-grade digital cameras. Aside from the 16X digital zoom, the X10 comes with auto-focus, image stabilization, smile detection, and touch focus. Intelligent software can recognize up to five faces in any photo and automatically match them with contacts in the phonebook.

You are forgetting one very important aspect: For how long will users of the SE X-10 be able to get updates? If I bought a iPhone a couple of years agoo, I would still get my phone updated with new features. If I bought a Sony Ericsson a couple of years ago, I would be left with a device that had not been updated for at least the past year, with the same set of features, (and probably most of the bugs) as when I bought it!

Can you elaborate on why storage is listed as being better for the Xperia over the Iphone? The Iphone offers 16/32GB, while the Xperia is limited to 1GB onboard and 16GB SD, for a total of 17GB. That also requires you to purchase the extra 16GB SD card.

On top of that, Android does not allow you to install applications to the SD card, so you're limited to 1GB for apps, and a lot of that might be taken up by carrier bloatware. This is all pretty disappointing for a phone that in all likelihood will cost more than the 32GB Iphone 3GS.

i just did a quick search and i found that more than 1 sites stated that it has a -262,144- colour TFT screen

  • emily

lost badly… xperia10 very laggy.. somehow i find the x10 interface not user friendly..

  • WorldTravellerguy

What are the HSPA bands available for the US market? Only 850 900 1900???
I'd be really dissapointed if I can only use Edge in EU…

  • James

What I like about the iPhone is that it have more apps than the X10 =(

  • bhavesh123

I would suggest you to go for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 because it is wide 4-inch capacitive touch display, 8.1 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a thoroughly tricked out Android skin. Moreover the finish is excellent, rubberized back slightly arched which helps in keeping a steady hand, the burnished metal strapping way that emphasizes and sharpens the edge through the display itself and also absolutely rigid. No multi-touch? TFT?

We have launched our page on the Xperia X10 at e2save already even though we won't get stock until April, mainly because we think there will be a lot of interest around it. not sure it will be able to out do the 'cult following' of the iPhone but you never know. We didnt sell many of the original Xperia but i think this one will definitely do better!

from what I see they are both great phones, but it all comes down to what I need, at least to me. I am always taking pictures so already the X10 looks good. And the iphone might have a lot of apps, but my friend who has it says its pretty much useless fun apps like the lighter, or shortcuts to internet sites. But I also like a real keyboard, and I know the iphone does not have one, and it looks like the x10 doesn't either. If there was a phone with a 1 Ghz processor, great camera, real keyboard, lots of memory, and a stylus (call me old fashioned, but I don't like using my finger to touch the screen) then I would buy that without thinking twice about it.

  • Sayid

Don't search quick then. Try to learn it slowly and properly first.

  • Chris

Here comes Ms. dumb. It's not laggy at all. Looks like you used it in your dreams.

  • Pete

    It is not AMOLED.

  • nick

It's interesting, since when did a 4-inch screen become worse than a 3.5-inch one? Number of colours may be the only factor, though the screen size is far more noticable than the number of colours. And as for the multi-touch support, it is very debatable, which method is more convenient. Say, MT requires to use both hands at once to do the same things and doesn't give any real advantage. MT may be an improvement possibly in games, otherwise this is just a trick by Apple: looking cool, but irrelevant in practice.

:- wow.. i think iPhone 3gs is much better than XPERIA X10… and the guy who have tabled this shite is a guy favoring XPERIA X10.. iPhone 3gs got a better storage memory than XPERIA X10… and i am sure XPERIA X10 will start getting stuck and slow when too many data's are installed… and even-tho XPERIA X10 got 8.1 Mp the picture quality is the same… and video mode is much better in iPhone 3gs… and when i take a look at Sony Ericsson, apple is much more user friendly…!!! i suggest you people to buy iPhone 3gs…!!
    Tc.

It says X10 wins in the storage category because the maximum external microSD storage it allows in theory is 32GB, it's only listed as 16GB because 32GB microSD hasn't gone into commercial production yet. So in actual fact 32GB external + 1GB internal storage is bigger than iPhone's 32GB storage on sheet.

  • mode

You won't be a able to use up 1GB on 100's of apps alone, not by a long shot. In fact most apps you'd be interested in installing won't exceed 40-50, c'mon seriously, is that such a deal breaker? The space is obviously for storage not apps and frankly, that's what you really need
