Sony NWZ-A845 OLED Walkman Launches In Europe, Asia Pacific

Sony Europe has stated that the latest A-Series Walkman, the NWZ-A845, will be coming to the continent in February. The new A845 is part of a larger NW-A840 series, which initially had a Japan-only debut in late 2009 and has been available there in black and brown and up to 64GB. Unfortunately, it seems that Sony Europe is going to offer only the 16GB model in black, which is odd because I thought they would surely hit the market with a large capacity player – at least 32GB.

UPDATE: It appears that the Asia Pacific region is going to get the 16GB and 32GB Sony A840 series Walkman in February as well.

We have some doubt that the A-Series will show up at CES 2010, but then again the S745 is selling unannounced by Sony Canada so anything is possible.

The reason why I say this is according to one of my contacts, Sony had this set for a CES reveal but I think that the American MP3 player market is too volatile and Sony may not have wanted to make the gamble. This is why we might be seeing region-specific launches. The latest A-Series Walkman is absent from some more recent Sony CES documents I’ve witnessed. So my contact and I are literally betting a beer as to if it is going to launch at CES or not.

If you have forgotten, this simply is the most brilliant Walkman offering from Sony to date – it has all of the features people have been asking for in previous Walkmans while shedding what it needed to. In my opinion, this is the most stylish appearance I’ve seen in a personal media player – and it has a jaw-dropping 2.8 inch WQVGA OLED screen. This is also the thinnest Walkman ever created at only 7.2mm. Sony has also finally come to the table with a better assortment of capacities – with the NW-A845 (16GB, Y24,000), NW-A846 (32GB, Y30,000), and NW-A847 (64GB, Y40,000) all due on October 31st. What’s also new for the first time is a TV-out function, that can output at 720×480 (SD) quality.

We have further pictures and a video of the A840 series in our original exclusive, “Sony’s Gorgeous New A-Series Walkman Features OLED, Up To 64GB Capacity.”

Well as was mentioned in another post if these fools dont pull their finger out and stop releasing tat we dont want or need then I too will be heading to the dark side for an ipod. What monkeys have they got in their marketing and design department that says..ohh i know what we will do lets be backwards and release a 16 GB player rather than the 64 GB version…IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rant over :)

We don't need another 16GB Sony model in Europe.

We want the 32/64GB versions !!!!

  • Hariboy

For goodness sake, 16gb is not enough. If they released the 64gb version I would snap it up straight away but as they aren't it looks as though I will have to get a new mp3 player from another company despite my preference for Sony- looks like both me and Sony are losing out because of their short-sightedness

No 64gb Sony, then I'll no longer be a customer.

  • John

WTF ?! 16G only? That's the most ridiculous idea ever! I've been waiting for this player to come out! But i don't want 16 or 32 Gb! If the 64Gb version isn't available then I ain't gonna wait forever! Very disappointed in Sony :( And so frustrating to know that there's a 64Gb version out there but out of reach!

No wonder why everyone's going for the ipods these days … what a damn stupid idea not to make the last products available to their potential customers …. i simply don't get it!

  • Anthony

You have to hand it to Apple. Simple effect marketing…….one device for all. Grow up SONY and get with it. The world is a small place now, you can't play silly games with “potential” customers any longer.

this is very disappointing! i've been waiting for months for the 64gb a847. i might also just settle for the ipod touch inspite of its mediocre sound quality. :-( i'm hating sony right now

  • James1701

Have to agree – why do Sony insist on releasing a nedlessly complicated range with a much-too-inconsistent set of features. I'm in need of a new music player BUT I really want to have gapless. The A845 is gapless in Japan (thanks to Atrac) but as far as I'm aware, Sony refuse to release any players in the West that are gapless – despite that fact that the major players like Apple and even MS Zune provide it as standard.

  • AppleConvert

hahahahhahah you wait I bet these idiots will release the 32gb version next year when the competition start with their 100+ gb versions! You had your chance and you failed, in fact you failed when you stopped UK support of ATRAC and the HiMd format players. Im off to Apple. Cya!

  • icantunderstandit

What? 16GB only? Why? Without doubt, A840-Series Walkman is the best.It has been praised as the best Walkman of Walkman series everywhere in Japan.A840-Series Walkman has not only highest sound quality but also better picture quality for higher-definition video than any other DAPs. 16GB is not enough to watch video.

  • Classicalfan

No love Sony. Thanks. Classical music listeners are just begging for the 64G. Hell, Beethoven works alone eat up a whole 16g's!!!!!!! I guess all Americans listen to disposable pop music. Thanks Sony! No, really Thanks! At least my NW-A829 still works!

  • jenniewb

Ah! It seems I'm not alone! 16GB? Not worth it- I'd need a new one in a few months. Where are the decent models? why so small? and why have all the new products been designed to suit the ipod? are sony trying to tell us something…?

  • Nick D

Sony really are missing a trick if they limit this to 16gb in Europe. There surely has to be a market for a 64gb non-touch MP3 player; I know that is certainly what I have been waiting for. Currently the only option is the fairly slow, inferior sounding, out-dated design sporting IPod Classic. This Sony player looks the business, has better sound quality and wields more practical in-pocket physical controls, but is going to be needlessly hamstrung by the lack of storage. Sony's stupidity really is something to behold at times!

  • Dack Davros

They're on sale here in Aus. $499 for the 32 gig. Ridiculous. I bought mine for literally half that much in Japan last year.

  • joebrady

Dack – how did you get on with the Japanese-only menus, instructions, etc?

  • Dack Davros

Well, I live in Japan and my Japanese reading level is fairly reasonable. But seriously, I really don't think that it would be too much of a hassle even if you couldn't read any Japanese. It wouldn't take long to figure it all out using trial and error, then the muscle memory kicks in and you don't even look at the menus as you use it, really.

  • Jim

I swear, I'd buy one RIGHT NOW at 64gb. Even at 64gb, I'm feeling a little constrained but I really hate the idea of HAVING to buy an ipod touch 64gb, just to satisfy me need for more than 32gb. I'm nearly at 32gb now with my mp3 collection. Can it really be that Apple is smarter than everyone else? Comon Sony, you INVENTED the portable music player. GIVE US THE 64GB VERSION NOW….

  • Philmeister

    32/64GB NOW

Still own NW-A3000 and it still pwnz ipod (and almost every other mp3 player for that matter) when it comes to sound quality. But I need more space the NW-A3000 was 20GB. Actually that's all I need more space 32GB atleast and great sound quality. Don't need wifi, touchscreen and stuff like that.

  • Rhubarb

16gb is ample… hell it is a pocket MP3 player not an external back-up drive. Use it as a player and just drag & drop music onto it as your requirement changes. You don't need your entire archive in your pocket. Did you take every CD or cassette you owned out for a walk when you had walkmans based on those technologies?! Spoilt, spoonfed, number obsessed and shallow sums up most consumers these days – as reflected by the comments above.

  • Anthony

Somebody got out of the wrong side of the bed today. Time marches on and so does technology. Many comments refer to the fact that Sony has provided these “numbers” in previous products and therefore should continue to do so. Besides, older technology was unable to play video, display photo's, download podcasts etc. So the extra space required can be justified. Besides, people want value for money, and there is noting spoonfed, shallow or spoilt about that.
