Sony really upped the ante with the color reproduction aspect of the Vaio TT compared to previous models. In this picture, we see the Vaio TZ on the left in comparison to the Vaio TT. Pretty damn noticeable, don’t you think? Reminds me of the difference between the PSP-3000 and previous versions.

Sony may miss its target for LCD television sales on lower-than-expected revenue in North America and Europe, the company’s president said. The company’s 16 million units target for the 12 months ending March is “tough to reach,” President Ryoji Chubachi said in an interview with Bloomberg Television today.

“We characterize the environment for our year-end sales as severe.”

Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd., Japan’s largest department store, and J. Front Retailing Co., operator of Daimaru and Matsuzakaya stores, said Jan. 3 revenue from New Year bargain sales at their main outlets fell as consumers curbed spending.

SonyStyle Japan’s Vaio Owner Made service, which allows customers to mix and match a number of components within selected Sony Vaio models, has indicated new models for January 10th. The biggest news is that 64-bit Windows Vista is now available. Sony Japan spoils the consumer further by offering incredible paint jobs on these computers, which seriously makes me envious as most Vaio displays at the local tech store are the usual silver, black, red or other standard color. While Sony does offer similiar customization services in the United States, the Japanese Vaio team have really done it right. There is just something about a few of these laptops that demonstrate how time and time again the sleek aesthetics of Sony hardware can blow away the competition.

The Vaio TT is now available in a custom Cool Highlight, Vertical Stripe, and Platinum White. Japanese consumers will now have access to 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit only offered to USA). The expected price is 30 million yen for the Blu-ray Disc and 160GB HDD “VGN-TT71JB.” The DVD version with 120GB HDD “VGN-TT51JB” will sell for 23 million yen.

Sony Computer Entertainment has cut the cost of materials used to make its PlayStation 3 game console by 35 percent, according to market research firm iSuppli. The components used to produce the second-generation of the PS3 console cost US$448.73, based on October component prices, iSuppli said, citing a recent teardown of the system it conducted to see what components are used inside. The market research firm then assembled a bill of materials based on that list of components and estimated prices to arrive at a system cost.

By comparison, the components used inside the first generation of the PS3 cost $690.23, based on mid-2007 prices, iSuppli said.

Sony makes a loss on the sale of each PlayStation 3 console, which sells for $400 on Amazon.com. But the loss Sony records for each console is narrowing, and the company may soon reach the break-even point, including other costs associated with manufacturing and sales.

“The PS3 may be able to break even in 2009 with further hardware revisions,” iSuppli said in a statement.

Sony managed to cut the material cost of the second-generation PlayStation 3 by using more advanced components. In particular, the consoles use a more advanced version of the Cell processor and other chips made using a 65-nanometer manufacturing process, instead of the older 90-nanometer process. This shift reduces unit manufacturing costs for each chip and lowers power consumption, which means Sony can use a less expensive power supply.

The number of components inside the PS3 has also been reduced, as functions previously handled by different chips have been combined in a single part, iSuppli said.

Several articles, originating from Gamasutra, have cited that the Playstation 2 was the most played console of 2008 according to Nielsen research. Is it really surprising to read this figure when Sony has sold 140 million PS2’s since launch? The low price point of the console was and still is a sweet spot for cash strapped consumers looking to have access to a huge library of games. Furthermore, the low cost of PS2 titles is fantastic. Surprisingly, it seems that the XBOX has gains of several percent in usage of the PS3, which was not the case for any other current generation consoles (XBOX360, Wii). We did find it surprising that the Wii ranks rather low in terms of use in the Nielsen tested homes, as it has been a huge hit for Nintendo and seemingly gained market dominance. Are people just buying the Wii and really not playing it?

CNET compiled top console usage into a list, which we will cite as well in interest to our readers:

PlayStation 2 (30.2 percent)

Xbox 360 (18.3 percent)

Wii (13.5 percent)

Xbox (9.1 percent)

PlayStation 3 (7.7 percent)

GameCube (4.4 percent)

Other (16.9 percent)

Sony has commited to the original reorganization it announced several weeks ago and expects no additional job cuts and plant closures on top of what it unveiled in December. Sony stocks have seen moderate gains as of late, and will eventually return to a better status as Apple has been swimming in a sea of mystery. The fate of Steve Jobs has been perplexing bloggers, analysts and other tech-savvy consumers as of late. A shift of power in the consumer electronics industry could signal better performance for Sony, especially with future products like the Walkman Touch. However, with the Apple iPhone and iTouch platform grabbing the interest of geeks everywhere, will Sony regain ground in its desired areas like personal audio?

There is still opportunity for growth in the Playstation front, especially with games like MAG (256 player in one server warfare), and other massive multiplayer environments. Televisions have somewhat reached a temporary plateau for Sony as LCD has matured greatly, and OLED is starting to rear its head in with FED right around the corner. The latest improvements to LCD TV’s, like higher refresh rates (hz) and other picture optimizations and colorations, are grabbing the interest of consumers. However, are these things a necessary upgrade in the minds of most consumers? We could keep going on here.

“We announced the restructuring of the electronics business last month,” Atsuo Omagari, a Tokyo-based spokesman at Sony, said by phone today. “We are not planning to announce further restructuring at this time.”

Well, after my last post about Choosing the right Sony HD Camcorder, I did purchase one - the HDR-SR10. Unfortunately, the SR11 was just a bit out of my financial reach, but I have been quite satisfied so far with the results of this camera. I will be using the HDR-SR10 to record high definition video at the Consumer Electronics Show and for various product reviews throughout the year. Like most consumers, I purchased a couple of accessories for the camcorder, including the mysterious ECM-HW1 bluetooth wireless microphone.

Despite the steep price, the ECM-HW1 is totally worth it (Amazon sells it for $127USD). We admit there is a rather odd appearance found in the grey bluetooth receiver, however, this is a truly interesting marriage of camcorder and bluetooth technologies. The white microphone is quite small and easily fits in the palm of your hand. Upon turning on the mic (which takes 2 AAA batteries, not included), a bright blue light will flash until you turn on the base station. There are three audio modes - off, on (records in 2ch audio), and 5.1ch center audio. It’s pretty impressive to think you can actually get 5.1-esque sound out of this little device.

Usage is pretty simple; its basically plug and play through the Active Interface, which powers the base station accordingly. After turning both devices on, the microphone and base station will flash blue repeatedly until they sync, which we found to be very quick (<5 secs). Operation is pretty much straightforward - you simply speak. The real stunner is the distance you can be from the actual camcorder, which Sony claims is up to 30m. My friend Nick Nigro and I tested the unit out with the HDR-SR10, unfortunately which was in auto mode and left the recording a bit grainy and blurry. However, the audio will give you a good idea that this mic can certainly handle a great distance, and will be great for interviews at CES. Don’t mind my false intro at the beginning of the video.

The ECM-HW1 also includes a clip, arm band, neck strap, wind screen, and carrying pouch.

Happy New Years, everyone! 2008 has come and gone and we have seen great growth and turmoil within Sony. The worldwide economic crisis hasn’t helped either, with consumers feeling the financial crunch and purchasing less premium electronics. As the tide rises and falls, we here at Sony Insider have done our best to cover Sony news; through this mission we have developed a good sense as to what Sony needs to do to try succeed in 2009 - and beyond. We don’t think that they’ll really follow through with any of this, though.

We’re just going to put this in a bullet list format for easier consumption:

Stop Africa’s Playstation War - Sony is being accused of still using coltan from mines that are being run by right-wing units of the Rwandan military and other militias who use children, prisoners of war, and other individuals who are impoverished to do the mining in Africa. Coltan is used to make certain components in Sony hardware.

Keep Pushing The Bar With Innovative, Feature-rich Products - Our report of Sony’s upcoming Touchscreen Walkman was the most popular story we’ve ever done, and that’s for a reason. People are ready for something truly different than the iPod/iTouch, etc. Sony must capitalize on the interest of this device by introducing an application store of some sort to keep it truly competitive. Another attractive option would be to include direct access to the Playstation Video Store.

Speaking of the Playstation Video Store, I seriously have to commend Sony for their Store and Video Store interface. It is probably the best UI I’ve ever used to purchase and browse movies. The PlayStation Video store should be available on ALL networked Sony devices immediately that have available storage - it blows my mind that it isn’t. Wouldn’t it make sense for your Walkman, Vaio, Home Server, etc to have direct access to the same interface? This needs to be called the Sony Video Store. Give it a brand name, not a sub-brand name. This interface is ready for prime time ASAP.Sony also needs to make sure all movies have a preview though to encourage spontaneous purchases.

Sony needs to hire Stan and I to continue building the strategic bridge between Sony and the consumer at a low cost. What really burned me was when Sony announced they are making a community and blog that seems almost identical to Sony Insider. It was a big insult. Make Sony Insider official, give us a decent budget, and we’ll blow the top off the conventional definition of marketing with great results.

Provide firmware updates for more products. Sony is doing a much better job, especially with the Playstation 3, but there are still many products that could use some firmware updates.

Keep hyping products with countdowns, teaser images, and other media like you’ve done with the Vaio P(ocket). It’s incredibly effective.

Feel free to add your recommendations!

Some additional notes from Stan:

I thought I would chime in and add a couple more things for Sony to take heed to:

1. Marketing, Marketing, Marketing (mostly talking about the US), make smart, mind blowing commercials, promote Sony brand on major networks, not just ESPN and its PlayStation marriage. Bring back your commercials that end with IT’S A SONY statement. I don’t think ads in magazines do its justice, visual stuff works!

2. Bring on the networked products, I know those are in the works, but I believe the time is right and Sony products need to be able to “speak” to one another with ease.

3. Where are the HDD recorders? Sony’s famous DHG-HDD250/500 were so popular and since 2005 Sony has not released a single HDD recorder (except in Japan of course). Now that HDTV is widely available, Sony needs to jump on this opportunity with an attractive (design-wise) offering to be able to record 1 TB or more of HD content and also burn it on Blu-ray (I know I know DRM and all that… do your magic though…Sony Japan released a few of those a while ago…). People are ready for it and want it (just check AVS threads), don’t let the cable/satellite companies steal the target population with their ugly boxes.

4. Please make your software match your wonderfully made hardware. Software division always suffered at Sony (VAIO apps need some coolness added, Sony Ericsson needs sleak and intuitive GUI, I could go on and on with other examples…).

5. We need a revolutionary product release that blows the minds of the consumer. Recently we have not seen any breakthroughs, just little achievements here and there. We know you got something cooking, bring it on. Financial crisis nowadays may scare you, but like Rick Clancy said once you need to look for opportunities even in hard times, so take a risk!

Japan’s industrial output dived at a record pace and core consumer inflation fell faster than forecast in November, putting the shrinking economy on course for a spell of deflation next year. With much of the developed world in recession and emerging economies quickly losing steam, many analysts think Japan’s export-oriented economy could go through one of its sharpest contractions ever this quarter and next. As exports crumble at an unprecedented pace, Japanese companies are not only halting factory lines but also scrambling to slash jobs, which in turn is hurting domestic consumption.

“Production is falling like Niagara Falls. What’s going on now is beyond what Toyota and Sony had ever imagined.” - Mitsuru Saito, chief economist at Tokai Tokyo Securities.

Shares in Grundig jumped 18.4 percent to 0.45 lira, while the main Istanbul share index was up 0.98 percent, a considerable reaction considering slow Christmas trading.

Wow, and just like that SonyStyle has accidentally released specifications and a picture of the new Sony Vaio netbook that has been a source of rumors and speculation for the last few weeks. Specifications include a 1.33ghz Intel processor, Windows Vista (Home Premium or Basic), a 8′ LED display (1600×768), up to a 60GB hard drive (128GB SSD available), unknown battery life and unknown price. This will be referred to as the P series, for Pocket. Awesome!

It appears the P series will have the same aesthetics found in the TZ and TT series, and will be available in Crimson Red, Champange Gold and Black Silk. However, we cannot confirm or deny at this time if the picture included in the placeholder at SonyStyle is just a reused TT image or not. Pictures and information courtesy of SonyStyle.
