Hey man,
Thanks so much for your feedback. I should have updated the post a while ago but I was hoping to write up a review, as I got both units (black and white) and all updated with the new firmware version you mentioned above.

Out of the box, this machine did it's job well but with the Vaio vgf-WA1 firmware v1.2 update, it works great!

I already had the OEM CD software installed. That was straightforward and easy, contrary to other i-net opinions. After setting up sonicstage, I had immediate access to all my music.

Here's a translated Sony Japanese home page for the Vaio WA1.

http://74.125.93.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp/support/acc/vgf-wa1.html

The FAQ's are useful but the big deal is the complete update history at the bottom of the page. So far, I have only used the "VGF-WA1 software" update. The install was smooth and painless. It detects WinXP-sr3, which requires a separate download and install for the wireless adapter manager, and notifies you of the skipped step in the install. The separate download is not necessary if you do not use the USB wireless adapter.

There is no trick language selection. It doesn't even ask, just installs in english (on mine).

The v1.2 firmware update is a substantial improvement but there is even more in the enhanced settings tool! (Still no internal memory access, but some free web radio access and rss feeds) The environment features access some WA1 settings, through a browser interface, that are not available on the WA1.

The NTP clock set is one of those, although I'm not sure if that setting sticks if all power is disconnected.

Anyway, that's my give-back for today.

Ha nice vid, I have to say, the bluetooth mic works really well, no voice cut outs or loss of quality. As much as I would like to own a sony camcorder, I still would prefer a canon camcorder over a sony one. I have owned a canon digicam and used various sony digicams and have to say I prefer canon's image quality slightly more.

For some odd reason, Sony canada does not have the HDR-SR10, only the SR220 which is a SD camcorder, and HDRCX12 which is the HD camcorder.

Good summary of what Sony needs for 2009 to be a good year. Going along with their marketing needs mentioned above, they really need to come up with catchy names for their Walkman players, particularly to differentiate the lines (noise canceling, bigger screens, etc.) Saying you have the "NWZ-A729" isn't all that memorable to a friend who asks what you use to listen to music.

I'll say it here (and on the other article about product support): MORE FIRMWARE UPGRADES, especially for their Walkman players. Sony has been great with extending the life of their PSP and PS3 hardware. Since the death of the ATRAC-based Walkmans, I'm left with gaps between my tracks, along with a couple other features cut out (playback history on the device, on the go playlists/bookmarks for example.) Why not add these to existing players and extend their usefulness instead of rebranding the players every few months? Make your players consistent so you can get into that lucrative accessories line, like Apple has done with iPods.

Since the shutdown of the CONNECT music service, I would love to see them truly partner with another music store. If the information about the Walkman Touch device is true, maybe Sony will team up with Amazon on more than just this device. It would continue to promote the open format they are proposing.

And more marketing (AGAIN) for all your products. People still pay attention to commercials, good print ads in public places, and so on. Good luck, Sony, you will almost always get my money for electronics, as long as they continue to be quality products. :) (Yes, some friends would call me a Sony fanboy.)

We're all hoping for some great info on the new Walkman Chris. I would be really grateful if you could find out if the the new device will have 32GB capacity in all regions. I'm from Ireland and we sometimes get left behind when Sony introduce new features to the Walkman range. Enjoy CES, I would probably get technology overload syndrome (TOS) and faint at the sight of all those lovely toys.

I agree with Jozo. We loved the unit except for the stupid brightness control - it lit up the whole bedroom and we couldn't sleep! Back to the store for a refund.

hi!
i think it is too late for a comment here, but i have a nwz a828 and i was very intrested in frmware updates. i have the 1.01 and i will try this one, although a never use the bluetooth option.

i would be much more interested in something to, for example, support more video formats, like the new walkman. i presume there is a software limitation, more than a hardware queston.

what do you think? do you see someting like that possible?

do you know if it is possible to do modifications to it? i would like to modify some easy details...

thank you!

I agree, GRUNDIG is NOT the same german Grundig anymore. Now it's just the name bought from a turkish company - and as you said:

The quality is poor and cheap crap! It is not the german quality Grundig it was before the brand went down ...

Do you remember Grundig "Fine Arts" components or the "Space fidelity"? That was the origin Grundig ... Goodbye.

It's funny you mentioned the marriage of bluetooth and camcorder...I was at one point so excited when I got Sony's Bluetooth camcorder: DCR-IP220 model. Believe it or not, but that thing can sync with a bluetooth modem and you can get online and sort of "surf" the web on its LCD. It even has a Mail Client so you could email pictures taken to your friends or upload it on back then So-Net provider site. Sounded pretty cool back in 2001, however your mic is more practical!
