500k Books Via Google Now Free For Sony Reader Owners

prs700goog

Together with Google, Sony now brings you access to over 500,000 public domain books for free. Now you can search, browse, and read over half a million public domain books preserved by the world’s great libraries on your Sony Reader. Great job, Sony! This is how you push a product. Unfortunately, the PRS-500 is not currently compatible with the books from Google.

Rick Clancy, Senior VP of Corporate Communications at Sony, brought in Steve Haber, who is based at Sony Electronics in the U.S. for a guest blog post at the Sony Community. Steve is leading this emerging business on a global scale and offered some interesting insight.

Nice touch, but all of the books are poorly scanned and I found the archive difficult to browse and search. Lastly, a lot of the books are also available as Sony Classics for $1.99. This new Google deal makes the “Get 100 free books” promotion a lot less appealing for potential buyers.
