Updated: Sony’s PSP-Go Revealed

E3 is just a few days away and the Internet is full of rumors and true facts of upcoming hardware and titles and one of the slipped true facts is a new PSP-Go that will be show cased in its full glory on Tuesday, but thanks to the leaked Qore Exclusive, PlayStation forums are buzzing with news!

Noticeable improvements and it looks like the new UMD-less PSP is a direct kin next to recently discontinued Mylo. It is still not clear if it is a touchscreen or not. I am looking everywhere I can to find out the exact specs of the screen.

PSP-Go will be featuring 16 GB of internal storage; 3.8 inch screen, smaller – 43% lighter than the PSP-3000, Bluetooth (and tethering for cell phone? random, but nice, and probably means stereo A2DP), Memory Stick Micro expansion slot (good stores have 16gb memory stick micro for $60-75USD). It also has direct access to the Playstation store, and movies and tv content. It’s obvious you will need to get some memory stick micro cards very quickly if you plan on having good content. Check out this amazing leaked PSP Go video courtesy of engadget (great work guys) as well as some really good shots here. Coming this fall. Wow.

On an unfortunate note, the launch has not been doing too well. The comments section of engadget and Gizmodo (1, 2), the two biggest technology blogs in the world, were basically a bloodbath of hatred – mostly calling on Sony to release the product with two analog joysticks instead of one, and other complaints about the “akward button layout.” What do you think?

More info to come!

It really does look like the Mylo COM-1 and 2 in design, I guess that's why they are trying to phase them out recently with price cuts. I love the Bluetooth idea on this as well. Really looking forward to getting my hands on one! :D

Well, I've been waiting for this but feel really bad…. I like the concept, I like the fact it's tiny and thin, light etc. but several questions come immediately to mind.
Since it's a 4th PSP redesign, what about all the accesories that come out so far? USB Cam? USB GPS? PSP to TV cable? Removable batteries? Well I can accept new cradles, but there's no new incorporated features, and I don't see the point of buying all compatible accesories all over again. Indeed, nice machine, but half baked in my opinion. And also, what's the point of having slide buttons, if you don't even have a touch screen? will we have to open the device everytime we want to pause a movie or music?
There better be some serious explanations or secret features at E3! or could there be an old prototype?

One more thing, it's not a real “leak”, since the official PS3 magazine Qore was downloadable for everyone starting today! Sony's mistake, or was it all planned just before MS and Nintendo conferences, to have all the attention?

Hmmmm, it's more like the ill-fated GameBoy Micro.

Smaller screen, proprietary connections, no compatability with previously purchased accessories/games.

I quite like the slider idea but why they didn't they use the space for a keyboard like the Mylo? {and perhaps little dual joysticks ;) } What I mean is that the balance of the device seems all wrong. When playing on my PSP there is quite a bit of screen “movement” even with the controls on the same axis as the screen. Make a smaller screen and put the controls underneath and I can see some real problems viewing what's going on on the screen due to magnified off-axis movement.

Something just a little closer to the size of the PSP3000 would allow cut-down front controls and if given a slider with the much requested keyboard (allowing extra controls) would have been an immediate buy for lots of PSP owners. If they'd combined not just the form factor of the Mylo, but also its improved internet capabilities and keyboard, with a PSP they would have had a winner.

There's a lot of downloadable product for the PSP that Sony hasn't a share in; the killer app should have been making the PSP a better Mobile Internet Device (3G & b/g/n wifi anyone? Bluetooth might work 'tho) and linking it to it's own Sony Reader content to use as an entry level e-book device (not to mention Sony movies, TV, and music). The amount of PSP users would dwarf the Kindle already if Sony sorted out its clunky browser firmware and used the online store to deliver e-books etc.

We never do get to hear the reasons why Sony don't do what the majority of their customers think is obvious, just why what they do will be good for us. Wouldn't mind getting some of their 'reasoning' behind their decisions; possibly making the PSP a 'better' internet device would allow Sony customers to buy their content from non-Sony sources. I suppose that's fine if it's their reason to cripple otherwise powerful devices and make them less useful to their customers, but I thought the point is to sell things that people can use and stay ahead of the technology curve to make money (God knows that's what they USED to do).

I think the PSPgo is where new PSP purchasers will start, but there isn't quite enough to it for the huge numbers of existing PSP owners to throw away their previously bought software & accessory laden devices.

I like the form factor, because I always thought there should be a combination of what the Mylo and PSP both offered. My only grip is that the screen size has been reduced. I wouldn't take too much stock from what the readers of two blogs say, especially when one of them (Giz) is completely anti-Sony in every which way. I hope that it does come with touchscreen, and that previous accessories might be compatible with it. I do agree with Karlos about features that should be added (e-book reader, something I've been saying for YEARS); I mean, Sony is putting out products that are powerful enough, so why gimp them on features?

Anyways… Sony Insider, I was hoping to get your thoughts on the new MS Zune HD. I love Sony, but that new Zune kinda blows the new walkman out of the water. What do you think about the spec comparison?

I tried the Mylos, both 1 and 2; and returned both within two days. I still have two PSPs, a 1001 and a 1000 model. Both work perfectly and I have no intention of replacing them. The 2000 and 3000 felt very “cheap” in terms of quality compared to the first model. This new monstrosity is terrible. Bad controls layout and the slider idea….:( The Mylo slider hinge had so much play and I expect these to have the same issue. Sony simply added a new component to break. Grrrrr.

Why not just use the old design, remove the UMD drive and add a second analog stick for future games. May it more structurally sound (bring back the internal skeleton) and add all new new features as well. It might now be as tiny as the GO!, but it would be easier to use.

In the end my biggest concern is not the hardware, though, but instead the software….the games. A couple of points:

    1. If I have purchased 12 games do I get the download rights to the digital versions of the games? I will not buy the games again. I know this creates a problem of providing proof of ownership, but I am sure something could be worked out.

    2. More importantly, the digital downloads will be (just like the UMD discs) will sold in specific country. I understand that the PSP can play UMD discs from any region, but we still have to import them. HOW are we supposed to purchase the Japanese version of a game from Sony's servers in Japan? I had to jump through hoops to do this with iTunes and I was never able to purchase digital music from Sony in Japan.

Could this mean the end of imports?
