Sony Quickly Moving Towards Playstation Phone

Sony is considering developing a Playstation cell phone hybrid in a bid to better compete with Apple Inc’s highly popular iPod and iPhone, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday. It’s no secret that in the USA the iPhone has become a powerhouse despite its lackluster presence in Japan. Perhaps this is the only way for Sony Ericsson to truly have a dominant presence once again. Many people say that the iPhone is nothing in comparison to the PSP, but it is the most perfect marriage of communication available at this time, offering great spontaneous play (Tiger Woods, Peggle, etc) and good over all quality in gaming .

Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones, the Nikkei said. What do you think should be in this phone? I feel that the perfect Playstation phone would be

Engadget has further musings and interesting comments about the PSP phone, as well as Gizmodo.

I like the mockup, similar idea to what nokia had with the N96 and N86 now, with double sliding. No doubt the screen will be touch and 16:9. I do hope they release it this year as it could help SE's fortunes out a little.

Cool mockup…it looks like a phone I would be interested in design wise

    1) Way too late to market 2) Sony Ericsson has proved they don't understand the concept of a “platform” with their release of the highly differentiated spec'd aino, satio and yari. All three have been touted as gaming platforms yet their specs and screen sizes are radically different from each other. Whereas Apple has high commonality between the ipod touch and all three generations of their phones. Developers will not gravitate towards a fragmented platform with no installed base. Lastly, Sony Ericsson doesn't have their own OS and they (Sony) have proved time and time again that software is not their strength. No one wants to buy a phone that uses an xmb interface (Aino). Not sure that the Playstation brand has sex/fashion appeal either. Many people buy their phones simply for status and fashion. Women will buy an iphone…not sure they'd buy a Playstation Phone. Just doesn't work and the Walkman brand has lost any value it had.

What I'd recommend is a Vaio phone. The name and the logo are sexy and their laptops look great. Build a Vaio platform that has great interconnectivity between the Vaio phone, Vaio laptop, PSPs and PS3. The phone, PSP and laptop all sport remote play and each have bluetooth and are able to share content with any other Vaio device…as well as be able to access the new app store (that will become one in the same to the PSN store but with branding variations. Why shouldn't Sony also distribute windows games for their PCs and laptops). This kind of arrangement would start to compete with Apple. If Sony thinks about these competitive issues as discrete, independent problems they will never compete. They have to think about consumers' complicated and interweaving lives and how information is used and is accessed. The iphone can control Apple TV, works terrifically with iMacs, is now a gaming platform, a camera, and now possibly works with medical equipment and other external devices. If they just put PS3 and Sony Ericsson designers together and not their PC, PSP and peripherals divisions they will never come up with something commercially relevant.

    Sooner the better.

Phone + internet + Game + walkman (good sound with 3.5 mm plug) + radio (with 3″ or bigger display) is a “must” device for today.

Sony must lead the market, not follow it.
