Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Crashing On Your PS3? Here’s How To Fix It [Updated]

I purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on launch day because I the hype behind this game was simply outstanding. The hype was well deserved because its the most phoenominal multiplayer fps experience I’ve encountered. The level of customization (different custom setups, killstreak unlocks, etc) and awesome little rewards like titles and callsigns have you constantly evolving your character. The game looks great on the PS3, although I wish the textures were a little more defined. Nonetheless, a strange issue started happening to me recently where the game would freeze or start freezing up during multiplayer gameplay. This would usually happen at the beginning, or even a few moments into a match. It was occuring over and over and I was getting quite concerned.

UPDATE: As of today, Activision released a 1.04 update to Modern Warfare 2 for the PS3 that fixed this issue for me. Up to this point, I had to delete my game utility data every time before I played to ensure a crash-free experience. This seems to be resolved now. If downloading 1.04 doesn’t help you, try these steps:

After Googling around, I didn’t find much until I actually went to Activision’s support site. I highlighted below in bold what fixed the issue for me.

Here is the fix they list for this issue:

This may be caused by a faulty game disc, or problems with the PlayStation 3. Check the disc for abrasions, scratches, and dust.

  • Ensure the PlayStation 3 is in a cool, well ventilated place.
  • Try deleting the game data. Go into the XMB menu. This is the menu that you see when you turn on your PS3. Select Game / Game Data Utility. Select the game and press the triangle button. Select Delete and then press the X button to confirm. Once this is done, reinsert the game disc in the drive. You will need to install the game data to the PS3 again. This should not affect your saved game as it is stored in a different folder.
  • Try the game on another PlayStation 3.
  • If none of the above resolves the issue then this may indicate a problem with your Playstation 3 and you will need to contact Playstation Consumer/Technical support at (1-800-345-SONY).
  • Additional PS3 troubleshooting suggestions can be found at Sony’s support site.

    I would absolutely agree to you that the game is worth the buy. The best of the multiplayer games that I have ever experienced. I also had some problems while playing the game. I will try to sort it out by the way you mentioned. Thank you for providing the information.

    what sham what sham they spend 2 years to make this game and they didn’t have clue , do they know people play as group as friends do they know or only they know peopele killing people , what sham for doing the game and you can not invit people …….. the software of this game is very bad made …..the problem is that on PS3 you cannot get into parties without cutting off your system. Also you cant invite friends to play with you easily, and once their in your party, they probably wont make it into the game that you are about to play. (they get kicked). this is extrememly annoying and makes the money spent a little hard to take when you cant play with your friends.

    I have the problem ever since one of those updates. It got progressively worse and worse until it eventually wouldn't even start. I found out thought that if i disable the internet i can play with no freezes at all. VERY STRANGE. so my playstation runs fine while disconnected from the internet but not while connected.

    The game is great! but all the bugs and issues from day one you have to wonder if infinity ward just half-assed the game cause they knew it would be a hit.

    I dont think it is a game disc problem, I have the first gen 60gb, my brother has 3rd gen 80gb. We multiplay together and both of ours will freeze around the same time about 2 min apart then systems will have to be restarted.

    The game will freeze on me most of the time when searching for players in multiplayer mode. I am sure it is not my ps3 slim since all games work fine except this one. I havent tried the highlighted one though which i will do later.

    Mine also locks up with single play and online play. I did the reload and still does not work. The game does not work on other PS3 either. Also there is no Scratches on the disc! I am a bit erked that I spent 60 bucks for 2 months of play and activision is no help.

    when i try to play modern warfare online with a friend, everytime we try to get into a session together is says that either we could not connect to host or error we lost connection for 12 seconds. what are we doing wrong?

    If MW2 Freezes while playing online. If you have modern warfare 1 as well, go and play one round online with that game and then play MW2. You may find it wont freeze again until you turn your PS3 off. My brother does this and it works every time. Annoying yes but its one way to help stop the game from freezing.

    hey, i am havin trouble with COD on my ps3,,,,i can connect to my brother in a different house, but wen i add my mate or he joins session it says unable to connct to host every time so we cant play eachother,,,does any1 else have this problem and know why?

    If MW2 Freezes while playing online. 1 Modern Warfare you as well, just go and play the game online with a round and then play MW2. You shut your PS3 wont freeze again until it can get. My brother has it and it works every time. Annoying yes, but its a way to help stop freezing game.

    To karl and whatnot, and others who whine and such, it’s not so much Infinity Ward or the game itself. The game is fine, the game has nothing to do with it. Modern Warfare 2 works fine on XBOX 360, which is the platform I play it on, and getting into matches and playing through them and whatnot is fine and simple, without any errors and such. Overall, I don’t support the PS3 so I can’t give much “needed advice” on how you can fix your stuff, but I can tell you this. Don’t blame Modern Warfare 2 & Infinity Ward for your problems, it’s simply PS3 once again going wrong.

    PS3 freeze after patching 1.11 when online game ends and leaderboard was on screen. Single mode shows the same problem when i play MW2. dirsc is clean!!!

    I don’t know who’s server this game is being played on but it sucks!! It’s making Sony look very bad when xbox has had no issues with the same game! 4 of us in one house 3 xboxes and myself and the ps3 same game only I have problems. Sony needs to make us play so they can upgrade cause if this continues for the black ops game I’m just going to buy an xbox

    When playing MW2 on PS3 it will load everytime when playing Capture the flag, but any other game u wont to play the internet connection will drop out. Can’t find out why.
